Margaret Eileen Elizabeth Clarke (b. 29 x 1937 Sutton Coldfield) has died. In 1962, as Peggy Wood, she married the British Master, PH Clarke. With Hampshire's Gill Moore, she tied for first place in the British Ladies in 1966, but fell pregnant before a play-off could be held.

OTB she captained and played top board for England in 1982 Lucerne Ladies Teams. She later became an International Correspondence Lady Master. A life-long postal player, in the 1984-92 Ladies World Correspondence Championship Final Mrs Clarke came twelfth.

Her father was CHESS magazine founder BH Wood. She was a finalist in 'Brain of Britain' and mum to three girls. Like her mother, a quietly assertive lady. RIP

That was Jana, surely? She may have captained then, but pretty sure she didn't play.

no, this was not an Olympiad.

Well the 1982 Olympiad - open and women's events - was (also) in Lucerne, so my misunderstanding is not too surprising.

For an obituary, I am trying to determine her date of death.
I have just remembered she was the Manager of the British Championships at least one year, before Gerry Walsh took over.
What was the name of the chess company she and Peter ran for some years?
She was such a pleasant person and so central to English chess development, it is a pity I don't have more data at my fingertips.
Written in Georgia at the Olympiads.
I have yet to find a good game on ChessBase to include. Can anybody help. I have corresponded with Gillian Moore, who she shared the British Ladies' Title with.

I think so, although it definitely wasn't just second-hand books.

Woolacombe, 1973 ('A Model for British International Tournaments - RDK) 'Becoming a Grandmaster' (Batsfords 1977) p 48. 10 player apa and won by Ray! I played at their last event in 1983, I think, a weekend swiss, and lost to Mickey Adams in the last round. He has not looked back since - JP.
