I received an e-mail today with a link to this event - http://wstcc2020.net/.

It's being played at the same two venues as now is, and previously was, used for the Prague Open in January, and being organised by the same people who run that tournament.

The venues are 4 or 5 stops from the centre of Prague on the metro.

And indeed the Summer Prague Open, for people who've played that.

This event looks like its definitely going ahead with an article on the FIDE site with 61 teams in the 65+ and 57 teams in the 50+ sections. Good news for all the veterans is that there are no entry fees and bigger prizes. Clearly there is the issue of whether the coronavirus will put people off from coming to Prague and we should know the answer to that over the next 24 hours.

Yes, I believe so. A number of the England U65s have dropped out though.

I've just exchanged emails with Mark Page, who is en route to Prague. He tells me that four of the five England 65+ first team have withdrawn and that he is now board two for that team. He also mentioned that he would be providing regular reports via the Kenilworth CC website (by which I think he means this one).

Live games are on chessbomb and no doubt elsewhere including on the official site link to chess24live

Good luck to all the England players

"Good luck to all the England players"

Maybe we can extend that to the other UK players!

I note in the 50+ event a team called "USA Four Brothers", comprising four players called Jhunjhnuwala. There has been discussion of multiple players from one family in a team elsewhere, but I don't think we have had four before.

I also note that Keith Arkell had a rather interesting Q+ opposite coloured bishop ending today.

One phenomenon stands out above all others here: Unusually for a chess event hardly anybody is coughing!

Not for the first time Harrogate CC not only have dual representation but also across two countries (Mick Stokes for England, Douglas McKerracher for Scotland). I wonder if any other club can claim that.

USA have four of the eight 2500+ players there. I hope some other team can make it interesting, England look as good a bet as any.

Hebden rested, so Plaskett comes into the team

The German Lasker team look strong too (Graf, Jussupow, Levin, Meister) and more than capable of giving USA a game

In case this hasn't been noticed, next year's event will be back in Italy. There was a bid from Sochi that looked excellent and would probably have won had there been a vote in Abu Dhabi, but a backroom deal was done. Pity, I seem to remember that last time Acqui Terme didn't get great reviews.

Not so great at the moment against USA 2, the No11 seeds. Arkell lost, Plaskett won, McDonald drew, Flear a small edge with 2Bs v B+N, six balanced pawns each. Doesn't look winning, but we'll see.
