European Seniors 2021

Post by Ken Norman » Sat Oct 02, 2021 8:28 am

Terry Chapman is playing on board one today.

A pity he is the only Englishman playing in this years European Seniors.

Indeed, and after 17 moves in round 7 (of 9) Terry is doing well today:

There may be no other English players at Budoni but there are some Welsh, Scots and Irish.
Peter Cafolla of Dublin has been doing well in the 50+ where the leaders took a quick draw today.

If Peter can win this game he is in the running for honours:

That's partly a calendar clash; Arkell, Hebden, Ledger and Bradbury are all over 50 and currently playing in the British Championship.

Have the last two you mention ever played in a World or European Seniors? Hebden has, but not for a long time I think. So probably Keith is the only one who would have gone if there hadn't been a clash.

When the World Senior Teams returns next May, will there be a strong English GM team as in the past?
England has challenged for the 50+ several times but only came home with minor and individual board medals.
The USA is now sending very strong squads.

Potentially England could win the 65+ in 2022.
John Nunn, John Speelman and Keith are among those who will be eligible for a 65+ team for the first time. (The event was not held this year.)

Thought that Arkell was a bit younger than that? Hebden might be eligible, however.

Keith was born in 1961 and Mark in 1958 so both over 60 but not 65+ yet.

I did mention this to Jon Speelman. He showed little gratitude for being reminded of his eligibility.

Keith is, as mentioned, still a fair distance away.

Congratulations to Terry indeed, clear second without a tiebreak. His start was slow but from the middle of the tournament he was playing well above his rating. His round 8 save against the eventual champion, Israeli IM Nathan Birnboim, was a tough watch. Unfortunately the last round was a bit anti-climactic.

It should be pointed out that there was actually one other player from the ENG federation, WIM Ingrid Lauterbach in the 50+, though she lives in Germany now.

The field in the Europeans was small but at least it was held. Here's hoping that next year Senior tournaments might get back to what they were pre-Covid.

Ah yes my silly mistake about Keith; of course he won't be in the 65+ for a good while yet.

Meanwhile the British Seniors are under way in Milton Keynes. I couldn't find any live transmission.
Results (some already in just before 6pm) are being posted at:

The 65+ and 50+ are on different tabs but the same URL will find both.

Congratulations indeed to Terry Chapman. Silver medal in a European Championship is a very fine result, and is a most fitting follow up to dominating the various senior events in the British Online Championships.
