23rd World Seniors Championship

Post by Ken Norman » Mon Nov 25, 2013 5:37 pm

The World Seniors Championship held in Opatija, Croatia was won by Anatoly Vaisser.

He was awarded the title on tie break from Jens Kristiansen who also scored 8.5

1 GM Anatoly Vaisser FRA 8.5/11

2 GM Jens Kristiansen DEN 8.5/11

3 GM Krunoslav Hulak CRO 8/11

4 GM Mihai Suba ROU 8/11

5 GM Yuri Balashov RUS 8/11

6 FM Adolf Herzog AUT 8/11

The ENGLISH Players results were:

Tony Ashby 6/11

Ken Norman 6/11

Oliver Jackson 5.5/11

Norman Hutchinson 5.5/11

Dinah Norman 4.5/11

We were told that Dinah created history by being the first women to play in the OPEN (Mens) Seniors World Championship.

I don’t know if that is correct as I have not had time to check the 22 earlier World Seniors’ Championships.

Wrong, according to Chessbase - they have Nona Gaprindashvili playing in 2005. I don't know if there have been any other women. She was just an obvious person to check.

It was a very good performance by Dinah with the lowest rated player she faced being rated 1990 and she ended with a rating performance in excess of 2000, so congratulations to her.
