Perhaps the more interesting question is how many people so dislike morning sessions that they wouldn't play, and similarly for afternoon sessions. My guess is that most of those who prefer the morning would still play in the afternoon, while greater numbers of people who prefer the afternoon wouldn't play in the morning.Alex Holowczak wrote:For the last three British Championship player questionnaires, we have had as many Seniors congratulating us on moving their session to the afternoon as we do complaining about how awful it is that we moved it to the afternoon, and that we should move it back.NickFaulks wrote:I've contacted the organisers, and apparently 9.30 is itself a compromise. German seniors like to start at 9!
edit : probably they've done a run around the park first.
edit again : we're just simple chess players - game, post-mortem, dinner, bar, bed, breakfast, preparation, lunch, repeat cycle. Does that make us bad people?

Re: World Senior Chess Championship S50
I thought it was well known that many GMs feel they do not play at their best in the morning, whereas I have never heard a single one complain about having to play in the afternoon.

Excellent. If I ever organize a GM-norm tournament, I shall be sure to arrange it so as to consist entirely of morning rounds.

Re: World Senior Chess Championship S50
Some splendidly old-fashioned openings in the games featuring John Nunn and Keith Arkell today. The Lopez Old Steinitz in Nunn-Barle feels like it could be Dr Tarrasch - Dr Lasker from the early 20th century... while in Keith's game with Kalegin I keep feeling I'm looking at something from Zurich 1953, with, say, Smyslov playing white and Geller black.

You might want to follow Matthew Sadler's take on the games

Reacting to Sadler's praise for Lauterbach 1-0 Gaprindashvili I went to the game and found apparently a huge double blunder right at the end where Nxe3?? Nxe3?? missing Nxb6 capturing a rook with advantage Nona.
Seems even the old Soviets now have their senior moments-my Guardian column this week which will be online later has an ending from the over-65 where an unknown could have forced mate against another famous ex-USSR GM.

Re: World Senior Chess Championship S50
Keith won, Mark drew, Sturua - Sveshnikov drew as did Bruno - Bischoff, so Keith and Mark still in the running, especially given they are experienced in 11 round events
John still playing

John has the sort of position that Keith would adore.

John has won, and now has 5.5 with Sturua
Keith and Mark on 5, with Kristiansen and Sveshnikov
I assume that Sturua plays Mark next, with black I guess
John to play Sveshnikov I guess
