IM Jack Rudd wrote:I think I see Nunn's drawing plan: he wants to play ...Re4, swap the rooks off, and stick his king on f3. That ties down the knight to the defence of the g-pawn and the king to the defence of the knight (because the black e-pawn is too far advanced), and he then sends his b-pawn down the board to overload white's pieces.
Sveshnikov has played his Knight to f2, presumably to thwart this ...simultaneously ruling out trading the last pawn w ...f4 due to Nh3+ ... and JDMN has played ...Kf6 after a long think.

Are there any other likely drawing schemes?

The other likely drawing scheme is a fortress. Just sitting on the position and challenging white to make any progress.

Now does 52...Rc8+ and 53...Rc3 work?

After Nunn's defeat suddenly our realistic hopes are probably only with Keith Arkell, who DID beat Hebden despite the earlier misinformation, is half a point behind Sturura and level with Sveshnikov with only a slightly inferior tiebreak, and has a round nine downfloat to the No27 seed from Turkey. Go for it, Keith!

GM Sturua Zurab 2523 6½ 5½ IM Barle Janez 2338 11
2 5 GM Bischoff Klaus 2504 5½ 6 GM Sveshnikov Evgeny 2517 4
3 27 Yasin Hur 2138 5½ 6 GM Arkell Keith C 2450 8
4 1 GM Nunn John D M 2602 5½ 5 IM Kalegin Evgenij 2474 7
5 2 GM Hebden Mark L 2540 5 5 GM Bouaziz Slim 2321 13
6 26 FM Furman Boris 2152 5 5 GM Kristiansen Jens 2405 10

I assume Keith didn't get Sveshnikov as they both have had 5 whites and only 3 blacks, but presumably they will meet in round 10

C'mon Keith

Yes, it would be great to see Keith repeat his European triumph here. I see he has played most of the other top contenders except Sveshnikov and Barle, so presumably he has a good chance of meeting Barle in the final round too.

Sveshnikov has been an impressive performer here - I see he was born in 1950, so is almost eligible for the 65+ section. Another demonstration, I suppose, of how much strength in depth was produced in the old Soviet chess system - as is Sturua, presumably.... and Kalegin.

[EDIT: PS - Looking up Kalegin I see he has three GM norms, all completed after he turned fifty (!), but is still listed as an IM - is that because his rating isn't above 2500...?]

No, he has been over 2500. However, he has only two valid norms, Evpatoria 2009 failed.

Ah - thanks. Does he have a chance of earning a final one here, anyone know? His TPR is 2406, so I'm guessing maybe not.

If he wins the gold medal he gets the GM title title outright, and 1st= gets him a norm, which in his case is just as good.

Edit : for clarification, 1st= must be top 3 on tiebreak.

Quick draws on the top two boards today. Arkell, Nunn and Hebden all seem to have good positions at the moment.

Mark has won. John is the exchange up, but seems to still have some work to do. Keith has a very nice position.

Keith has won. John Nunn still playing. How does Keith's tiebreak compare to Sturua? They are joint leaders now aren't they?
