So for the only round starting in the afternoon, Nigel has been rested.

Actually there are at least two good reasons why Nigel was rested in round one.

1) Round one, when they would clearly be playing much weaker opposition, was an obvious opportunity for reserve, team captain and sponsor Terry Chapman to get an early game while one of the GMs sat it out.

2) Nigel played six games at Bunratty over the weekend (finishing joint second behind Wesley So) and then had to wait for a ridiculously delayed prizegiving - which So (though he was staying at the hotel another night) could not be bothered to attend. Nigel had to get to Dublin for a very early Monday morning flight out to London, so my wife and I drove him; he didn't get to his hotel until about 11.30pm.

3) Nigel also had then to write his weekly newspaper column, probably about Bunratty, so he was hoping to miss round one in order to recuperate and get time to do that. He told me he would be quite happy to play the other eight rounds.

It's good that the top match in each tournament is being shown live. With a little luck, that should mean the England 50+ games will be shown live throughout the event.

Actually if you turn 50 during 2015 you are eligible to play in the "junior seniors" yourself. It is age at 31 December that counts.

Nigel Short is not actually 50 just yet.

Chess Scotland are reporting a 3.5 to 0.5 win over Belgium 2 and a draw by their B team.
According to the tournament site, the England B team won 3-1.

There are enough people following the event that the unofficial ecforum is likely to be up to date with results including eye witness accounts.

It might be different at the venue, but that's just the team pairings rather than the actual player line-ups. Not knowing which opposing player he would be playing (on five player teams) seemed to be another of Nigel's criticisms.

Todays opponents only have a 4 man squad, so it should already be possible to work out who he will be playing. It might not be the same for the opposition however if Chapman were to play again.

To be precise, I had a deadline for my New in Chess column on Tuesday, but Tim Harding was right that Sunday-Monday was exhausting due to acute lack of sleep and lengthy travel from Bunratty to Dresden. I was very grateful that the other guys gave me a day off to recuperate and remove a burden (the article) from my mind.

Thanks. I was looking for the 65+ results. I see we won 3-1 on Tuesday but lost 1-3 yesterday.

On another point, the clock times shown on the live boards do not seem at all reliable.

Especially in Speelman's game where a few minutes ago it was showing Gruenberg almost out of time, then the same time as Jon and next Jon in time trouble.
And the aggregate times in the various boards don't match at all. And it doesn't seem to be possible to turn the boards around. Very poor software compared with DGT.

Just now I see Jon has won, on board if not clock. His opponent was a FIDE IM, CC-GM, and one of the few players to beat Penrose in a postal game.
