Keith will be looking to repeat his epic win in the 50+ and looks like his main competition will be Sturua and John Nunn once again. Thought there was a chance Nigel Short would be playing. We've got three players in the 65+ as well at the moment. Very few women players listed in either event so far.

It will be held in the ancient city of Eretria, Greece, from 28th April until 8th May, 2015.

I think it's a modern resort island near the ancient city.
Round 1 (of 9) starts this afternoon at 4pm Greek time.
As there were insufficient female entries for a separate tournament, the women are in with the men but will have separate prizes.

The 50+ event has most of the players who were in contention last year in the Worlds, but not Sveshnikov or Hebden.

We shall have to see whether they have live boards. If someone finds them this evening, please post the link here.
I doubt if there will be many competitive games in round 1 but Keith has a potentially tough pairing.

Link for participant list and pairings:
http://www.chess-results.com/tnr171508. ... d=1&wi=821

Top pairings in the 50+ are:
1. Ilandzis Spyridon (2151) v Nunn
2. Sturua v Gamback Bjorn (2141).
3. WGM Saunina Lyudmila (2138) v Arkell.
4. IM Kalegin Evgenij v Hewson

There are some other British entries, Terry Chapman is Black on board 13.

The 65+ tournament is much weaker and smaller than last year's World event.
Vasiukov is top seed. Nona Gaprindashvili is top woman (of four) and fourth seed overall.
There are only a few others 2200+.
There are some GB players and Pete Morriss of Ireland (a former schoolmate of Ray Keene at Dulwich).

Alastair White (Scotland) has White on board two v GM Kupreichik.

Surprised that Nigel Short is not playing, as it is in Greece. It must clash with another tournament.

This weekend's 4NCL possibly. Either that or he didn't want to have to rush back from the match with Kasparov.

Surely if he has recovered from jet lag he will now be punch-drunk?

Surely if he has recovered from jet lag he will now be punch-drunk? After all, George North (Wales and Saints) is still not back playing rugby after taking much less punishment.

Time to lay off poor Nigel, I think; this senior tournament was never on his agenda.
Quoting from Edward Winter''s Chess Notes yesterday:
"Wanted: one topical chess forum where 100% of the contributions are worth reading, and not 100 forums where 1% are."

Let's discuss the Senior tournament instead. Chessdom (thanks for the link) are just showing the top five boards in each event. (Though board 5 in the 65+ isn't working?)
As of now they have the wrong result showing for Sturua. Looking at the position, he must have won.

Nice finish by John and hopefully Keith will eventually cash in the extra pawn in his R ending.

Perhaps he should start one.

His terms of use would be difficult to meet! (see entry 9254)

You might be able to run one if I was here full time otherwise a forum is just a forum.

That is certainly the longest single-sentence paragraph that I have read in a very long time! :D

Great fun in John Nunn's game. He's sacrificed all three kingside pawns on successive moves.

And now the exchange!
The shallow online engines at Chessdom don't believe it but Houdini4 on my laptop says John is killing him after 18 Qh2 and that 18 Nxg7 is also quite strong.
