Thanks, again, to Kevin for keeping us informed despite the trials and tribulations -
Internet keeps dropping out, but I will try...

11 England 1 - 23 Niederösterreich 3 : 1
7.1 FM Stebbings, Anthony J 2312 1-0 FM Bukacek, Emil 2153
7.2 CM James, Geoffrey H 2166 - 1-0 Danner, Lambert 2112
7.3 Stokes, Michael 2161 ½ - ½ Woeber, Friedrich 2115
7.4 Quinn, John M 2127 ½ - ½ Gruszka, Herbert 2041

The losers' prize is to play England 2 tomorrow! The winners' is to play Russia women, who are all WGMs.
England I v. Russia's WGMs is already going on -

Russia women won 3-1, England 2 drew (5 in a row!), 3rd team won and 4th team lost.

Kevin Bowmer (ENG 2) pointed out that yesterday he beat a player called Strauss from Vienna, using the Austrian Attack!

Tomorrow ENG 2 play a Dutch team...

Saint Petersburg lead with 11/12, 6 teams on 9, England 1 (seeded 11) are 8th on 8,... England 2 (seeded 34) 25th on 5, England 3 (seeded 30) 31st on 5, Gwent (seeded 27) 34th on 4, Dyfed (seeded 33) 35th on 4, and England 4 (seeded 38) 39th on 3.

England 1 won again to stay in contention, England 2 had their first loss, allowing England 3 to catch them after a draw, England 4 had their first win. The two Welsh teams meet in round 7. I did ask if they would draw 2-2 tomorrow or go for death or glory, but nobody gave a straight answer. England 1, 2 and 3 meet higher rated opposition again. England 4 have a very slightly easier match against the 41st seeds but there's not much in it. Highlight is probably match 2, where Russia play Russia women.

I see that Kevin won his individual game today!

He's probably out having a schnapps & schnitzel.

Of course, his team England 2 drew again.

So, it's probably coffee & strudel for his three teammates.

11 England 1 - 17 Oranje 2½:1½
8.1 FM Stebbings, Anthony J 2312 ½ - ½ Ghijsen, Pim 2182
8.2 CM James, Geoffrey H 2166 1-0 Van Oosten, Arend 2145
8.3 Stokes, Michael 2161 1-0 Munninghoff, Alexander 1945
8.4 Quinn, John M 2127 0-1 Westerveld, Wim 2175

30 England 3 - 38 Turku 1½:2½
13.1 Scholes, James E 2090 ½ - ½ Kauko, Pekka 2039
13.2 Hall, Richard V M 2150 0-1 Rantanen, Veikko 1957
13.3 Farrand, Julian T 1994 ½ - ½ Alkkiomaki, Jyrki 1942
13.4 Edwards, Ray B 1924 ½ - ½ Ranki, Martti 1940

27 Gwent - Wales - 36 Stiftung BSW - DBAG II 2 : 2
16.1 FM James, David J 2154 1-0 Dyk, Roland 2068
16.2 Powell, Lloyd 2107 ½ - ½ Hollstein, Joachim 2050
16.3 Thornton, John D 2004 ½ - ½ Mai, Hartmut 1969
16.4 Bowers, John 1823 0-1 Schneider, Karl-Heinz 1946

26 Vorarlberg - 34 England 2 2 : 2
18.1 FM Pilz, Dieter 2243 1-0 Bowmer, Kevin 2067
18.2 Haertl, Siegfried 2050 0-1 CM Thurlow, Kevin J 2001
18.3 Frick, Guenter 2061 ½ - ½ Davison, Colin F S 1998
18.4 Kuntner, Reinhard 1972 ½ - ½ Cooper, John G 1987

At last a win - after a fairly dull opening and middle game, it got lively, I allowed him to queen a pawn with check, but I got so much play, he had to give the queen back and then I got a won ending. That sounds a bit easier than it was...

40 England 4 - 33 Dyfed - Wales 1 : 3
19.1 Phillips, William 1898 ½ - ½ FM Jones, Iolo C 2164
19.2 Scowen, Roger S 1889 0-1 Bennett, Patrick 2004
19.3 Wood, Peter R 1872 0-1 Van Kemenade, Rudy 1960
19.4 Emerton, Keith 0 ½ - ½ Gilbert, Colin 1697

Saint Petersburg (15) beat Russia and now need only a draw against Russia women to win the title. Israel (13) must win and hope St P lose. 5 teams are on 11, and England 1 on 10. Dyfed are on 7, Gwent, England 2 and 3 are on 6, and England 4 are on 4.

Thanks all - last round starts in about 45 minutes. Amazingly England 2 out-rate the opposition for the first time. I am off sightseeing as the temperature has plummeted to about 32 C. It's been 38 or 39 the last few days, and some of us are suffering a bit. Our hosts have done a great job organising coach tours and visits to places of interest. Helpfully, for sole travellers, a bus terminates near the hotel, and the other end of its journey is the end of a metro line, so you can get into the city centre without having to think too much.

Next year's event seems to be in a splendid venue in Dresden. Sadly it reverts to 50+ and 65+, and I have no intention of playing a bunch of juniors. There is another Seniors' event in Greece, which should be interesting.
