Despite the extra pawn, it was surprisingly difficult to convert. Perhaps 36 b4! was the way ( to meet 36...Qa4 with 37 Nc7, winning on the spot).

In the end I pushed the boat out too far, but of course it was a must win game to keep hopes of gold alive.

The game is here:

Round 9. Keith Arkell playing an interesting line against the English Opening.

Well he often states that ...g5 is his favourite move in chess albeit he normally saves it for the middle game and not move 4 :)

chessbomb's second best suggestion is 5. e4 . The idea appears to be that if 5. .. Bxe4, then 6. d3 hits the Bishop enabling the Bishop on c1 to take the g5 pawn. Also possible is .. g4 by Black, but white gets the central pawns.

Not ideal pairings - but I guess chance of a medal was low now anyway.

Good luck to Keith though

He does have an impressive record of playing on board one in the last round of tournaments and however unlikely it sometimes seems a couple of rounds from the end he often manages it.

It looks like the final round starts an hour earlier so 13:00 UK time.

Nikolic-Arkell, white seems slightly better (move 32)

Nikolic converted to finish outright first with 9.5/11. Rozentalis will probably finish second if he converts R&2N v R.
