Keith's position is really awful even given his legendary powers of recovery. He is a pawn down with a worse King and a worse minor piece but still we shall see.

Two pawns down now but on the bright side, White's attack may have burned out for the time being.
Likewise John has got to an ending with some hopes of saving it whereas the online Stockfish was saying White had a much bigger advantage had he kept queens on.
Khalifman's time shortage may help if Nigel can find some tricks in the next few moves.
EDIT: I don't think the times chess24 are showing in Keith's game can possibly be right.

Re: World Senior Teams 23 April to 3 May, Crete
Keith has now lost to make it 1-1 and Ivanov is playing very confidently against John. Nigel will have to keep trying for a long while yet but we shall be lucky to make it a drawn match. If that doesn't happen, it will be a matter of fighting with the Israeli teams for a chance of bronze.
It looks like Scotland are going to beat Sweden 2.
LATER: John has lost now.
Big development is that it looks like Ashdod CC may beat Armenia (although Gruenfeld missed the strongest continuation a few moves ago).

Nigel came up with an ingenious temporary rook sac to create some chances of winning. See move 43.

Ashdod v Armenia is 1.5 all with Maryasin having an extra pawn for Ashdod in an opposite colour B ending, but it will probably be drawn.

Nigel slightly better now, so match could be drawn, hopefully.

Even before Nigel's d6, the position was surely drawn - Black has a blockade and White's extra pawn is useless.

Yes. The game looks a draw now.

Online engine wanted Nigel to march his K to f3 and play g4 but I guess Nigel judged this would not work.John Moore wrote:Even before Nigel's d6, the position was surely drawn - Black has a blockade and White's extra pawn is useless.
A shame, and in one of the last two rounds England will have to play Ashdod so not even the bronze is assured.

So you will probably play Tatiana Bogumil, the current 50+ world champion. What an honour for you!NickFaulks wrote:Bermuda play Russia Women, seeded 8th. What the heck??

I don't really understand why your team has taken on the handicap of defaulting a board in every match. A last minute thing, no doubt, but couldn't you have advertised for a 50+ player in the forum? Or poached one of the other team's reserves? I bet not all the St Petersburg players are from St Petersburg, Ditto Ashdod, Offenback, Bielefeld, etc., etc.NickFaulks wrote:Bermuda play Russia Women, seeded 8th. What the heck??
Ah, but I was so much older then. I'm younger than that now.

It was indeed a last minute problem, on the Friday before the start. All our players must be BER, and if I had known of another one they would already have been in the team.Brian Towers wrote:I don't really understand why your team has taken on the handicap of defaulting a board in every match. Hugely disappointing result for England yesterday in the 50+ so it looks like bronze is the best that we'll be able to do plus some individual medals. I think Nigel for example is doing well on Board 1.
