Re: English Seniors 2019
I've received an email this morning from the ECF (a pleasing thing in itself)
The ECF is relaunching the annual English Seniors Championship with a four day FIDE-rated and ECF graded congress at the St Johns Hotel, Solihull in April 2019.
The event will run for four days from 4th to 7th April, with a total of seven rounds. There will be two sections - Over 50s and Over 65s - with the two winners becoming English Seniors Champions for 2019/2020. English players aged 50 or over by the end of 2019 will be eligible to enter the Championships, with an 'early bird' discount available on entries received before 15th February.
Full details of the congress can be found here ---

We hope to see as many of you as possible at this exciting event to re-establish the Seniors Championship on the chess calendar.

Two rounds a day, eight hours a day, for three days, for those 65+. Are they kidding?

The quote above says 7 rounds, the website however says only 6, being Thursday evening, two rounds Friday and Saturday and one Sunday.David Robertson wrote: ↑Fri Jan 25, 2019 1:04 pmTwo rounds a day, eight hours a day, for three days, for those 65+
Many of those 65+ play weekend tournaments with at least two rounds a day, some of them at the 90 30 move rate.
Re: English Seniors 2019
Yes, I know this. But we're discussing what claims to be a national championship here, not an extended weekender. If the 'English champion' is selected from that cohort which enjoys bumbling around the weekend circuit, one is entitled to reflect on how much of a champion they would really be.Roger de Coverly wrote: ↑Fri Jan 25, 2019 1:14 pmMany of those 65+ play weekend tournaments with at least two rounds a dayDavid Robertson wrote: ↑Fri Jan 25, 2019 1:04 pmTwo rounds a day, eight hours a day, for three days, for those 65+

Re: English Seniors 2019
Surely those who are more competitive will be playing in the European Seniors that overlaps the same dates.

I realise that such clashes are hard to avoid, but that is an unfortunate one.Dan Lambourne wrote: ↑Fri Jan 25, 2019 3:49 pmSurely those who are more competitive will be playing in the European Seniors that overlaps the same dates.

Further email from ECF
Anybody here among the 57 entries so far?Dear ECF member
This is a brief reminder about the English Seniors Championships, which will be held at the St John's Hotel in Solihull, starting on Thursday 4th April and running to Sunday 7th April, with a total of six rounds. There will be two sections - Over 50 and Over 65 - with the two winners becoming English Seniors Champions for 2019/2020. There will be a trophy for the winner of each section, which will be presented after the last round, in addition to the prizes as previously advised.
English players aged 50 or over by the end of 2019 are eligible to enter the Championships, and full details of the congress can be found, together with an online entry form, here - https://www.englishchess.org.uk/english ... pionships/
The congress is already very well subscribed with 57 entries at the time of writing this message, and we hope to see many further entries in the days leading up to the event, which is intended to re-establish the English Senior Championships on the chess calendar.
Warmest regards
Ed Goodwin and Nigel Towers

I suppose there's a good reason to get the old 'uns champions settled in very early for the 2019-20 season.
