I did some "poking around" on FB in the Chess Book Collectors groups and have had a fair few replies including

Jim Musumeci wrote:I know David from our college years (during most of which he was an expert) and can corroborate that he earned his master’s rating after he graduated. I also know that at some point he gave up OTB play for correspondence play, and would be surprised if he didn’t excel there, too, as he was a dedicated and thorough researcher, especially of openings. He used to go to our university’s rare books collection and seek older analysis (e.g., Bilguer’s Handbook) to supplement current theory, and had an extensive knowledge of the 2. c3 Sicilian, for example, before it became popular. Very friendly and freely shared his findings with me—I used the ECO-format opening analysis he gave me to beat my first 2100+ player (I was rated in the 1600s at the time).
