Northumbria Masters & 1st Darlington ChessFest, 20-25 August

Post by Chris Goodall » Thu Jul 31, 2025 10:58 pm

Just three weeks to go... https://northumbriamasters.com/nm-event-information/ (can't copy and paste from that page, but it's all there)

Entries can be found here, Gormally and Hebden the biggest English hitters so far.

There's no game in the main events on the Sunday afternoon, but what there is is the 1st Darlington ChessFest!

Darlington is 2h30 from Kings Cross, and the Dolphin Centre is in the centre of town a short walk from the train station, which is the oldest train station in the world. Tim asks that players not go sightseeing in Darlington during the games.

Where did the first train go?

Technically the station opened in 1841, Manchester Liverpool St and Crown St (in Liverpool, now replaced later with Lime St) are much older and opened in 1830

The Stockton and Darlington Railway started earlier in 1825 but there wasn't a station until the date above

It is amazing what you pick up from Michael Portillo on TV sometimes

Ah, apologies - always check your train facts when addressing chess players! Darlington is the oldest surviving station on the oldest steam train line in the world, but not the oldest station in the world.

Are any games being broadcast? One section from the event is listed on chess.com, but says "There are no games to show because this event has not started yet." even though it started yesterday according to them.

There aren't any. There was a notice posted to the tournament website citing internet connectivity issues at the venue.

Thanks all. Shame that there are no live games, but can't be helped.

A great start from Jude Shearsby, the last-minute replacement.

The bottom section of the Swiss tourneys seems rather poorly subscribed?
