Play Chess for the NHS

Post by Kevin Thurlow » Tue Apr 28, 2020 4:13 pm

I received this earlier (as doubtless many of you have) So here it is (with Jo's permission!)

"I hope you are safe and well during this difficult time.
My name is Jo Ferry and I am assisting in hosting an online chess tournament to raise funds for the NHS.

I am working alongside Jon Hill who has been an avid chess player for many years. At a time where social distancing is so important we want to encourage people to stay at home and stay occupied, whilst raising money for a worthy cause. Therefore, Jon and his brother Michael intend to collect donations through the concept of ‘Play Chess for the NHS’. Every game that is played helps raise money for the NHS.

The idea is to unite the online chess community and raise money for the NHS together charities. The goal is to raise £10,000 by arranging online chess tournaments on chess.com where anyone can join and play.

We will be hosting weekly tournaments every Saturday at 2pm on chess.com and are encouraging those who take part to donate to our Just Giving page ahead of playing.

We are encouraging everyone to donate as much or as little as they can, even £1 to join in. We won’t be checking each players donation as we understand money is an issue for many at this difficult time. We will trust that everyone who joins in will have given what they can, and we will continue to encourage playing chess as a means to keep our players occupied and safe at home during lock down.

Chess.com’s app is currently under construction and so we ask that players use a mobile browser or laptop to play so they don’t encounter any issues. The tournaments will be an Arena style with a time limit of 1 hour with 10 minutes blitz standard chess games. It’s great fun as everyone gets to play different players from around the world as many times as they want to, within the hour. There points are calculated at the end and the winners are announced.
The top 3 winners will receive an online trophy next to their username
on chess.com. Also, the top ten winners of every tournament will be published on our Facebook page:

We are also working on securing a free lesson with a Grand Master for the winners.

We would greatly appreciate your support in either helping us to promote our event or indeed in helping secure a lesson with a Grand Master to offer as a prize to encourage people to get involved.
It is so important to support our NHS and chess is the best way we know how!
Many thanks for taking the time to read this. We hope to hear back from you. Please feel free to email us or alternatively you can call on 07754169294.

Kindest Regards,

Jo Ferry"

I wondered, its just that you said that you had "Jo's permission" so it sounded like a personal recommendation. I read this email and deleted it as it has all the hallmarks of a scam, and I apologise in advance if this is not the case.

I emailed them before posting to see if they wanted it published (they might have had it in hand already), and quickly got a reply saying please do it. That's my only contact.

I am not sure, but I have done a little googling and I fear that Adam might be right.
