Expanding a little:
As the Education Secretary is promoting his home town as a nice place to visit
.....maybe he could be invited to open the Scarborough Congress (when it takes place)
.....promoting Chess in Schools & Communities

As they say
"If you haven't been to Scarborough, you've not lived."
I think that will be a very good idea for Gavin Williamson to open the Scarborough Chess Congress.
I know the same weekend the goths gather in Scarborough for the Halloween weekend in Whitby, so perhaps he might be sent there aswell.

Personally, I wouldn't trust Williamson to open an envelope; I'd much rather he concentrated on getting Education sorted out, not being surprised that if you can only have half as many children in a class, you need twice as many classrooms and twice as many teachers
Any postings on here represent my personal views

I'm afraid there's not much chance of Williamson sorting Education out.

Education (like NHS) needs more money. There have been worse Education Secretaries (on both sides), but I find GW's voice worrying. He tries to hide the Yorkshire accent, but it surfaces every so often. Do one thing or t'other, lad.

I'm still hoping Scarborough Chess Congress goes ahead. The website states that the organisers are currently not accepting entries yet.

Events at the Spa Complex (Chess Venue) up to October 2020 are being cancelled or postponed.
The Vintage Fair which is on Sunday 25th October 2020 (same Sunday as the chess) has not been cancelled as of yet.
If The Vintage Fair goes ahead, no doubt there will be limited entry & social distancing.
......& no doubt this will affect the number of people allowed to enter the venue & congress.

The Scarborough Congress website seems to have been hijacked - I mention that here in case one of their organisers spots this, if they haven't already noticed.

Thanks Paul.

I've passed it on to the web creator and site host.

Yes fixed.

Thanks again Paul. It was only when going through a browser that the problem occurred so we were oblivious when entering directly.

Still our experts rose to the occasion.

Scarborough Chess Congress 2020

Any updates on if the congress is still planning to run in October 2020?
I read on a social media post for the "Vintage Fair" (same weekend as the chess), that the management company for the Spa Complex was planning redundancies.
Although there are currently no plans to close the Spa Complex permanently.

Scarborough Chess Congress

Unfortunately, the Organising Committee of the Scarborough Congress has been forced to admit defeat in its efforts to hold the event this year.

We have been informed that the local authority will not make a decision on allowing venues like the Spa Centre to open before 1st October. The company in charge of the Centre will then have to confirm the financial viability of staging events before 2021, many users having already cancelled. That is almost certain to cause a further delay to an already tight schedule, even if it will be possible to stage the Congress.

With that timescale, and the many other uncertainties surrounding the event, it has been decided that it is in the best interests of all concerned that the decision to cancel is made now.

We apologise to our many regulars but circumstances are beyond our control. We look forward to returning in 2021.
