For the non familiar about the geography and population distribution of the area, what does it mean? That there is a risk of a lockdown, or that all the clusters are far away?

I had a look the other night, and North Tyneside has 200,000 people I think and South Tyneside has 150,000. I think from the chess point of view we should know over the next three weeks a clear picture of what’s going on. The venue is a council owned sports centre, so they will react to government guide lines very quickly I would imagine.

It looks like if there is more than 50 cases per 100,000 the place goes under local lockdown.
Just been announced Caerphilly in Wales is to go under lockdown from 6pm tomorrow evening as its case rate is 55.8 per 100,000.

One of the conditions there is not to enter or leave the borough without a good reason, so that probably wouldn’t be a chess competition. I think South Tyneside did tip over 50 cases per 100,000 but are currently hovering just below that threshold. North Tyneside is 23 I think as of a few days ago.

Because of the tunnel, South Tyneside is a plausible area for accommodation for out of town players.

During the British in 2012, I stayed at a hotel in Jesmond. It is/was something of a party area at weekends.

There seem to be a few posts worrying that this event may be cancelled.
Is there any factual basis for this from the organisers, or is it all speculation?

I think the organisers are confident and have everything financially secured, and the gist is only a local lockdown would stop the event going ahead. The council areas to the south and west of North Tyneside do appear to be teetering perilously close to that happening. I think it's just fingers crossed that North Tyneside's rate of infection doesn't follow suit over the next 7 days.

I'm keeping positive. After all, I started this Topic along with Harrogate, Fareham and Manx Chess Championship. Too much negativity.
There appears to be a massive increase in cases in Tyneside, however it started from a very low base.
It's not in the top 10 for cases per 100,000 in the country.
I'm hopeful that this and the other OTB tournaments will go ahead.

Complete hogwash, that does nothing to help the prospects of a return to OTB chess.

North Tyneside councils website figures appear to be four weeks behind in comparison with Westminster City Council weekly updates. But do your own mapping on each update. Good luck - you may be the first this season.

A couple of paragraphs in The Guardian by Leonard Barton;
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/ ... -encounter

The organisers have said today (11/09) that nobody from an area currently locked down should be attending the event, which may be a few of the present entries.

A lift from a North East news outlet this evening shown below, comparing weekly figures from the 10th September to the 3rd September. It would be a surprise I think if some of those Council areas don't add a clause this week not to mix with other households, as many Councils in the North West of England have already done.

'All North East areas record rise in coronavirus infection rate
Figures show that the number of Covid-19 cases have risen in all local authority areas in the North East over a week.

Here is the full list.

From left to right, it reads: name of local authority; rate of new cases in the seven days to September 10; number (in brackets) of new cases recorded in the seven days to September 10; rate of new cases in the seven days to September 3; number (in brackets) of new cases recorded in the seven days to September 3:

Sunderland 94.3 (262), 34.2 (95)

South Tyneside 75.5 (114), 51.7 (78)

Gateshead 74.2 (150), 43.1 (87)

Newcastle upon Tyne 63.4 (192), 29.1 (88)

North Tyneside 46.2 (96), 21.2 (44)

County Durham 43.8 (232), 18.5 (98)

Northumberland 21.7 (70), 18.9 (61)'

Update 15th Sept - all 7 councils write to the government asking for stricter restrictions; https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/no ... t-18931636

Can I suggest that those who wish the organisers well with this venture send a modest donation, if they can afford it. Whether the event goes ahead or not...
