You might mean Elo ratings (after Professor Arpad Emmerich Elo (1903-1992)

The Electric Light Orchestra has had little input to chess ratings over the years. :)

(Possibly posting to "Pedants United" was more appropriate?)

I prefer elo - save Elo for referring to the person.

Chris, that is the draw for Round 1 of the Douglas Championship, a different tournament being held on weekday evenings during the season.

The situation in the Manx Championship remains that there are currently 16 entries, with a closing date of 2nd October.

OK David, my bad and thanks for pointing that out. I think the one I posted up was the one Simon was referring to as well as it had the two byes in it. The ECForum will therefore have to wait a little longer before they can witness this epic event. Shame its in term time as I would have been tempted to play (assuming they let me in), I remember playing the international tournament at Port Erin a couple of times and the IoM is really a nice place. I remember Dennis Hemsley, the late great IoM organiser and lighthouse keeper telling me that due to the Gulf stream it had never snowed in the Isle of Man. Always wondered whether that was actually true!

To be fair to Dennis the conversation I had with him was in 1997 so he would have been unaware of the record snowfall in 2013. The reference to 1963 would be enough to shatter the statement but perhaps it had faded from his memory or perhaps he didn't consider it to be significant.

I don't think Dennis moved to the Isle of Man until later than 1963.

However, I suspect that he was knowingly exaggerating a little when he spoke to you.

On the other matter, my thanks to Simon for the apology. I had overlooked his post, preceding yours, when I put the record straight.

I believe that the Douglas Championship started today.

I've just looked at the list of entries.
There are now 17 entrants as of 20th September.
The strongest player that has entered is now Li, Wu.

I'd assumed it had been quite bad often, having had a conversation with an ex-IoM resident who had helped rescue sheep from the snow in 2013; I think like here in NW England, the weather has become more extreme this century

Dennis would have been correct that the IoM has snow more rarely than we do in the UK though

Hopefully the Manx chess events will proceed safely over the next few weeks; I can't see any OTB chess in the UK for the next 6 months or so based on today's announcement, but who knows?
Any postings on here represent my personal views
