Gibraltar Chess Festival 2021

Post by Paul Robert Jackson » Sun Aug 30, 2020 10:27 am

Anybody know if this is going ahead?
Website usually updated by now.

I did email the organisers a couple of months ago.
Stuart Conquest used the phrase "cautiously optimistic".

Good luck to Stuart but not only is Covid-19 and accompanying travel restrictions/quarantines a potential worry, there is also the risk of a no-deal Brexit and the border with Spain being closed, or at least fraught. Back in 2022 maybe?

But early next year the virus might be less of a worry. As for Brexit, **** knows at this point.

I understand that the Gibraltar organisers were having preliminary meetings last week to try and assess their options, so probably nothing is decided yet. The Gibraltar government is the chief sponsor, so they will tread carefully.

I would have thought John Saunders may have some information.

I have received another email from Stuart Conquest.
They don't think the festival will be able to go ahead in its usual format.

2021 Festival Cancellation
With the greatest regret we hereby announce that the 19th edition of the Gibraltar International Chess Festival, which would normally have taken place in the second half of January, 2021, is officially cancelled.
Each year Her Majesty’s Government of Gibraltar anticipates with pleasure the safe arrival, from all over the world, of hundreds of chess players and their travelling companions. From first-time guests to regular participants, from juniors to seniors, from amateurs to grandmasters, our goal has always been to try and make everyone feel equally welcome. However, with such large numbers, and with visitors from across the globe, the risks associated with COVID-19 are simply too high for our usual Festival profile.
Gibraltar will nevertheless contribute significantly to chess in January, 2021. An announcement will be made shortly.
We hope to see you all in January, 2022.
Stay safe!
The Organising Team and Sponsors.
