Another alternative 5 11, 4 1, 6 8, 9 10, 12 7, 14 13 (I only looked at it quickly so could be wrong).

The pairing rules are designed to produce only one solution for any given set of data. If the outcome isn't desirable, it's the rules that need to change. Probably it's the idea that players "must" play people on the same score that doesn't work once a small number of players has degenerated the Swiss almost into an all ply all. 4NCL division 4 team pairings are done manually, but I believe similar issues may have arisen towards the end of the season.

Yes, the problem is using the rules as they stand in a small tournament. It is interesting to consider if there are other "more sensible" pairings and then working out whether it would be possible to draw up an improved set of pairing rules for tournaments with small numbers. I worked out the pairings I gave by staring at the top and pairing down and then half way through starting at the bottom and pairing upwards. This was using maybe the flawed logic that the top players were likely to have played most of the top players and the bottom players most of the bottom players with the middle players having more possible options, it seemed to result in more reasonable pairing for the top boards. I focused mainly on the players scores.

Ah! Really appreciate your help - I don't seem to have received that email - the only mail I have says: "Thank you, your entry has been received. When your payment is confirmed, your entry will be put through ..." the money has been taken, I'm in the list of entrants but no mail as you describe. (Now I find the date, I realise I could not play in the final even if I qualify....!)
I assume therefore that you have withdrawn.

However, if you should still wish to play in the Qualifier, you need to join the Club at https://www.chess.com/clubs/members/cap ... ip-over-65.

Then you just need to turn up in Live Chess tomorrow (Saturday) before 1000 and click on the relevant tournament link.

Although several people on here have been very helpful, I would just like to point out that, to put it mildly, this Forum is not one of the official ECF channels of communication.

The channels which are are the main Chess.com Club at https://www.chess.com/club/caplin-briti ... mpionships and various WhatsApp groups.

Thank you David... no, having paid £15 I would like to play in the qualifiers; if I should be fortunate enough to qualify then I will look to rearrange my Sunday plans.
Thanks to advice on this site, I have applied to join the club you indicate - but I don't know how I was supposed to know this without the helpful advice of others on this Forum. I have not yet been admitted to the club and hope I will before tomorrow morning
I note your "mild" admonition - and apologise - but I don't understand how I can communicate with anyone via the website you provide the link for and have no idea what you mean by "various WhatsApp groups" - where would I find them?
I'm really not trying to be awkward - or waste people's time - just want to play in the event for which I have paid

It wasn't intended as an admonition - not to you anyway - and I apologise for giving that impression. I was trying to be helpful to anyone else in your position.

If I was admonishing anyone, it was the ECF Board members for their refusal to engage with this Forum.

Regarding how to communicate on Chess.com, you go to the link I provided and "write a note". See about half way down the page.

I know nothing about WhatsApp. My comment was aimed at people who might do.

I am about to play in the ECF Friday Evening Diamond Blitz Arena. When it finishes, I shall check whether you have been admitted to the Over 65 club and follow it up if not.

Many thanks David - for your specific help here and for the work you do in general.
It seems that my entry had gone astray and I wasn't being sent information about the clubs and method of entering - I've forwarded my copy of the receipt to the Controller who took immediate action; I now appear to be in and able to play tomorrow.

I too have checked and I can confirm that you have now been admitted to the relevant club, so you can now concentrate on playing.

My arbiting duties have finished, so I shall be watching with interest tomorrow and on Sunday.

I have just discovered during a phone call that I have spent the whole day thinking it was Saturday and it wasn't. Tomorrow is Saturday.

Are English Arbiters self employed suppliers of services and are they affected by any EU rules post Brexit when working in the EU?

You would at least hope that their professional qualifications will be recognised.

a) Yes

b) Not to the best of my knowledge, but I am not the best person to ask. Not since the Turin Olympiad 2006 have I received remuneration that was governed by the law of one of the remaining 27 EU countries.
