The trouble with issuing bans is that the ECF has very little power to enforce them, apart from in the few events it itself runs.
When I was on the board (and I think you were, too) 2 juniors were found to be cheating at congresses and we wrote to their parents suggesting that they be withdrawn from competion for a year and the parents co-perated in doing this, so there are ways around the lack of a formal mechanism.

I suppose they could refuse to grade their games. However if the ECF were to try to assume wider powers there would likely be outcry.
Terminating/refusing to renew someone's ECF membership would be possible and reasonable if they'd been caught cheating.

"I looked at the given link and the D.O.B. was only given as 2006."

As Paul has said, English chess players are like race horses, they are deemed to be born on 1st January, Year X.

"I suppose they could refuse to grade their games. "

There was a case many years ago whereby one player did not have several losses graded due to someone deciding he must have thrown the games. He and his opponents (especially the one who took 6 hours to beat him) were furious...

Is the disqualified junior one of the favoured ones? If so, (s)he'll be back soon.

Seems to be playing on this evening. Is the rule you can carry on until after your appeal?

Essentially zero percent chance, as the tournament uses FIDE rules for age determination. Ie 1st January 2022
Thanks Paul,

Not aware of that, my interest in playing in an under 16 tournament ceased in the mid 60's.
The trial by forum had the player banned forever before any details were known.
I was clutching at a straw on behalf of a young player.
Now I don't know who to pity, the young player or the adults
ready to to march on Torquay armed with pitchforks and a bible.

Thanks Roger for clearing that up. Yes it was a joke.
I really should stop this nonsense but it's the Scorpion and Frog syndrome.
(though I will store the idea for future use and if I'm stuck for a space filler...'The Incident at Torquay')

He defaulted in the first round of the Atkins this evening.

I know the cases you mean, and I was in fact one of the arbiters at both those events.

The draw is up for the first round of the main event, starting tomorrow afternoon: http://chess-results.com/tnr655607.aspx ... =1&flag=30.

And, so far as I can see, there are two players who also played in the Olympiad: Katarzyna Toma and Lan Yao. Have I missed anyone?

Thank you for posting, Angus.
Looking at the players, it’s difficult to see far beyond Nick Pert to win the Championship, although retaining the title would take some doing. Otherwise, I would say any of the top 20 or so,on a run of form, could be in the mix.

I'm pretty sure that those are the only two who played in the Olympiad.

However, there is at least one other British Championship competitor who was there. Nigel Davies was the captain of the Barbados Women's team.

I may have missed others.

Hopefully Justin can do a 'Nakamura' with an after game daily stream post.
A 'From Our Man in Torquay' type of thing.
He could also tell us any about any 'genuine' incidents.

I can tell you it's three years since I last played a proper game of chess, which feels like less than adequate preparation right now
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

Given that, how did you get to qualify to take part? Just curious.
