Thanks to all those who have agreed to take part. Apologies for the poor female representation. This was not for want of trying on my part. I promise to do better next year.

Thanks also to Lance Leslie-Smith for agreeing to act as tournament controller and Mark Hogarth for agreeing to act as arbiter.

One or two players in the end preferred to play at the British championship, but we were not unduly inconvenienced. I would, though, encourage the ECF to give as much notice of the dates for the British as possible, so other summer chess festivals such as ours can be organised around them.

As expected, the top rated competitor, Irish IM Conor Murphy, was the comfortable winner of the 2023 Kingston Invitational Masters tournament, held at Kingston University from 24-28 July. He finished with 7½/9, 1½ points of Peter Large and Graeme Buckley.

Thanks, Graham. The Kingston tournament was really enjoyable and well-organised by Stephen Moss. As for Conor, he's an extremely talented player and close to clinching the GM title (it's thought he just needs to reach the required rating). Also, a very pleasant and personable young man.
