Shreyas can't possibly need 2/2 for a norm; if a field is norm-eligible, 7/9 is good enough for it.

I suspect it should read Shreyas needs 1 v a 2568 in round 9 or 1.5 v 2082

Thanks for publishing the right figures Loz.

The Internet seems to be fixed so the live games can be broadcast.
(That's my excuse for getting things wrong and deducting 1/2 from Shreyas' total!!! It is also not very warm.)

The Internet is currently down at the venue!!!

Shreyas needs 1.5 v a 2568 in round 9 or 2/2 v 2082

For IM norms we have
Borna Derakhshani needing 1.5 v 2393 or 2/2 v 1907
Tom Brown needs 2/2 v 2259

(subject to confirmation)
Borna has saved a difficult looking ending against Edouard so needs to play a 2393+ tomorrow and win.
Tom Brown lost his game.
Shreyas is a pawn up but a draw looks most likely. Move 40 (again) did cost him most of his advantage.

So both need to win, but presumably Shreyas has White and Borna more likely to play Black? What time do they start tomorrow? (One never knows with the last round - well, not if one is an idle spectator who is even too lazy to look things up).

Same time tomorrow (14:15). Shreyas has just had a double black so will be white. Other than that, I'll have to wait for the pairings to appear.

There seem to be only two possibilities, assuming a draw on top board. Gupta and Jacobson have to play on board one, while the third co-leader, Zhang, must downfloat since he already played them both. He, like Shreyas, is due White, and the other two players on 6/8, Sengupta and Gasanov, are due Black. Neither of the latter two have played any of the top six.

So it would be

Zhang (2558) v Sengupta (2501) and
Shreyas (2438) v Gasanov (2487)

or

Zhang v Gasanov and
Shreyas v Sengupta.

Presumably those who really understand swiss pairings can already which it should be, by virtue of the ratings.

Borna should get an opponent high enough to have a chance of a win albeit black against a 2500 GM won't be easy. He managed to beat one in round 7 though with black so fingers crossed.

Sengupta is the higher-rated of the two, so he should get the upfloat.

In addition to Shreyas & Borna who need to win for their final norms (GM & IM) Bai Xue also needs to win for a WIM norm.

I don't know whether Shreyas really did prepare with Freddy yesterday, as their games suggest, but if so it seems to have been a very successful collaboration.

Will Shreyas still be short of 2500 if he wins today?
