Sorry if I'm a bit dim (not good at maths), but how exactly does updating the lists more frequently make progress more slow?

If you play lots of games during a rating period of a year, you get more points off other people if your rating is low at the beginning of that rating period - you get lots of points for all the wins etc.. Do the same calculation with the rating being recalculated every month, and your rating goes up during the year (every two months at the moment), so the rating differential decreases and you gain less rating points for the same results.

Rather than increase the k-factor, why not extend the number of games for which the higher k-factor applies?
