e2e4 Gatwick Congress : 17-19 June 2011

The e2e4 Gatwick Congress will again take place over the weekend of Friday 17th to Sunday 19th June 2011.
The event is our first venture with the fantatsic 4 star Crowne Plaze Hotel Gatwick / Crawley
The venue is 3 miles from Gatwick Airport, and easily accessible by both road and rail with a shuttle bus to and from the station at the airport.
As usual we have three sections which cater for all standards of player. The Open is FIDE rated (and ECF graded) as is the Major (open to players rated below 2000 or unrated players graded below 170) and the Minor (U140) will be ECF graded.
The Open is of course a British Championship Qualifier, and all points scored contribute towards the
e2e4 Grand Prix. This is the last of this season's e2e4 Grand Prix events and this event carries double points!
There is a hefty discounted entry for those players staying at the venue, a good prize fund on offer and discounted accommodation for chess players of £49 B&B per night for single occupancy or £31 pppn double occupancy. Something for all players.
We look forward to seeing you there.

James Byrne wrote:Please forgive my ignorance, but is it possible to achieve norms at these events? I think it says in Fide Handbook the tournaments have to be 9 rnds, but the e2e4 events are 7 rnds or less. I expect I might be misinterpreting the Fide Handbook, but if someone could clarify that would be appreciated, thanks.
The FIDE handbook is correct so one cannot achieve a norm at our weekenders which are 5 or 7 rounds. However, we do run events where norms can be achieved such as the
Sunningdale International which is a 9 round all play all in August or the Gatwick Premier, a 9 round swiss in October.

With 11 days to go the event is rapidly filling up. It's going to be a bumper event again with more than 100 entrants already, including 5 GM's in the Open. I wonder when was the last time that Keith Arkell was 6th seed in an English weekender?
There is still time to enter, but you are advised to do so very quickly indeed.
For those in need of accommodation, we have sold our allocation of rooms but there may be the odd cancellation so get in early to get on the waiting list.

With one week to go we have
Open : 55 entrants (incl 5 GM's ; 2 IM's ; 2 FM's)
Major : 33 entrants
Minor : 30 entrants
We can accommodate about 150 players so there is still time to enter.
For those looking for somewhere to stay, the hotel is sold out but there are spaces close by

Please be aware that there are now just 15 places left in this event. If you want to play, please don't delay. When we are full, we are full!
Colours for round 1 will be determined by the toss at the Third Test Match between England v Sri Lanka at The Rose Bowl at 11:00 on Thursday, 16 June 2011.
If England win the toss, the top seed in each section will be white. If Sri Lanka win the toss then the top seed will be black in round 1.

What is it with people begging and pleading to play at Gatwick. We are full people. There is no more room at the Inn. We don't event have a spare table even if there was any more room!

...but if you want to play in a FIDE rated Open or Major in June, why not play at Yeovil the following weekend? We are not yet full.
