e2e4 Torquay Congress : 8-10 February 2013

Post by Sean Hewitt » Mon Nov 12, 2012 5:56 pm

Our first event in picturesque Torquay sees the The Imperial Hotel Torquay play host to us. An exclusive cliff top hotel, 4 star The Imperial is the perfect venue for an e2e4 Chess event. Overlooking the bay, this magnificent Victorian hotel offers stunning views across the Torbay coastline, and is ideally located for exploring the English Riviera.

The Imperial has great facilities including Beauty Rooms, Gym, Swimming Pool and Kid's Club so there is something for everyone. We have 3 sections of chess too, with the Open and Major being FIDE rated.

Full details available here.

Colours will be determined by the number of goals scored in the Rep of Ireland U19 v Czech Rep U19 match, being played at 19:30 on Thursday 7 February. If there are an even number of goals, the top seed in each section will play white in round 1. If there are an odd number of goals, the top seed will be black in round 1. Zero goals counts as an even number.

Yes it is roast beef and very tasty i put 2 slices of beef in with a tiny pinch of salt delicious :D

Looking forward to watching Peter Wells play i have always liked his style of chess and he is a really nice man always willing to chat and spend time showing younger players how to play better chess. I played Peter Wells in a chess simultaneous he beat me real quick with a deadly attack. There appears to be two Arkell in the event as well.

I counted four :D

Keith's brother Nick made his tournament comeback (after 29 years!) at the recent e2e4 West Brom event. His two kids are again playing in the Minor.

There may be some dispute over the 29 years as he actually played a blitz tournament in my back garden in the mid 90s, racing to 5/5 before being ground down by his brother

Wow. I read about Nick (Keith's brother) in Keith's autobiography (Arkell's Odyssey – The Autobiography of a Chess Grandmaster), which is an excellent read, btw, and highly recommended. Relatively short, but well worth reading.

Yes your right 4 Arkell are in the event.I only tend to look at who is in the open so missed those 2.It be interesting to see how those 4 get on who ever gets the most points by those 4 should be given a prize by Sean :) any way can not wait to see the live games from this event.

I have seen some film of you playing chess with various people in your back garden was it on you tube? can not remember now but it looked like you where all having a great time playing blitz chess.

Well i m off to read a book with a nice cup of tea :D It not a chess book its a book about the battle of Stalingrad.

The game was a 1-1 draw, so the top seed in each section will be white in round 1.

Initially on facebook but then also posted to youtube:

http://www.youtube.com/results?search_q ... .0...1ac.1.

If that doesn't work then typing Loz Cooper in should locate them. Sadly there's no footage from 1991-94 or 2005 and 2010 :(

Just popped down to Torquay to see the tournament - what a magnificent venue. It must be the best playing venue I've seen in the UK. There is a fantastic view across the Bay as the players contemplate their moves. Well done to Sean for organizing such a great event.

That is a good film of every one enjoying playing chess for your birthday. I really enjoyed watching that it was good to see people just playing chess and having fun to. You got any more planed for a future birthday?

Its snowing here again hope every one is keeping warm.
