ITV4 are televising the match. The toss will take place some time around 15:15.

In the under 2050? Really? Surprised you qualify for that Roger.

Anyway, congratulations.

I managed to lose around 70 points in the 2011 British and 2011 Bucks & Berks. Whilst the 2012 British Seniors was a good hunting ground for recovery of the points, other tournaments, notably the London Chess Classics rather less so.

The Sunningdale U2050 was somewhat unsuccessful in rating points for a well known arbiter of a similar age and rating, so it could have been a risky event.

Even winning the tournament offered no great rating gain, about 12 points or so. The ECF performance was around 200, so I've had better.

I've been checking some of the games that were played on adjacent boards. In some of them at least, I wouldn't have agreed a draw, but then I'm often around a quarter of a pawn over optimistic.

The other motivation for playing down was new opposition. Apart from the foreign players, I've played most of the top half of the Open. I've played Keith only once, but Mark and Simon about four times each, with my best result a draw against Simon in a rapid-play when he was about 14.

Ah yes, I dumped a shedload of points there too. I did OK by ECF standards with a +2 =2 -2 but I lost game to a 180 who had an 1800 rating and only drew against a kid in the 150s who had a rating circa 1200.

That depends on how you define success. There are plenty of U2000 tournaments around and as from 1st June I'll be eligible to play in them.

However, I won't be able to enter a big money tournament at that level for a while - questions might be asked.

Despite my troubles at the board, it was a pleasure to discover that e2e4 events are indeed well run and enjoyable. My thanks to Sean and his team.

Congratulations to Roger on winning the event.

I lost a fair number of rating points as well, though looking at David's score (3.5/7), that was a good deal better than mine (0.5/6 with one half-point bye), but the rating points loss looks to have been more drastic. I get the feeling that, given the form I was in, I would have done just as badly in the U2050 than I would have done in the Open (and hence lost far more points). I don't think I've ever yet withdrawn from an event due to form, and I'm not sure I would want to do that (the game is too enjoyable even when playing badly!), but sometimes it does make sense. Congratulations as well to Roger - one of the things tempting me to enter the U2050 was seeing his name there! :)

I think one of the good things that we try to do is give players different options. All too often 170 players can only be fodder in the Opens. By varying the limits of our 2nd sections from 1900 to 2050, we hopefully give some extra options to players. It is interesting to see who plays up, and who plays down.

Congratulations to all the players in the event. As usual, it was a pleasure to run. Next one is Sunningdale on 5-7 July and I might even play myself!!

Another Sunningdale tournament? Making up for the skipped one? :)

The ECF calendar entry for July 2013 links to the High Wycombe part of the website:

http://www.englishchess.org.uk/calendar ... july-2013/

I had assumed that it was in High Wycombe and the Sunningdale details were in error (given the closeness to the May Sunningdale event). Seems like the error is the other way round. The calendar section of the e2e4 website is now very confusing (for me at least!). Tockify?

EDIT: Wow, that was quick. the ECF calendar entry has been corrected already!
