The Italian tournament isn't the same as the Greek one just completed.John McKenna wrote:

Yes, that's right - from the link to Wikipedia in my post, above -
"Since 2012, there is another World Amateur Chess Championship, organised by the Amateur Chess Organisation (ACO), which is not recognised by FIDE."
It also says that the winner of the FIDE World Amateur receives the FIDE Master (FM) title and 2nd & 3rd each receive the Candidate Master (CM) title.

More important, from a UK viewpoint, is that the woman champion, decided within the main event, receives or used to receive the WFM title. This was won by Elaine Rutherford for Scotland and by Rosalind Kieran and Jessie Gilbert for England.John McKenna wrote:the winner of the FIDE World Amateur receives the FIDE Master (FM) title and 2nd & 3rd each receive the Candidate Master (CM) title.

My thanks to Leonard for setting the record straight.Leonard Barden wrote:More important, from a UK viewpoint, is that the woman champion, decided within the main event, receives or used to receive the WFM title. Did Sabrina Chevannes also gain the WFM title by winning a "World Major" Championship? I recall that being mentioned on the forum many moons ago.

All the women players on Kos received sun hats! Very practical given the conditions, and the pink ones were particularly fetching.Leonard Barden wrote:More important, from a UK viewpoint, is that the woman champion, decided within the main event, receives or used to receive the WFM title. That has left me a not so fetching image of David wearing a pink sun hat.

She was 2100 in 2005 at the age of 18 which qualified her for the title. Since then she has become a WIM and has one of the three norms required to be a WGM.John McKenna wrote:Did Sabrina Chevannes also gain the WFM title by winning a "World Major" Championship? Re: WORLD AMATEUR CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS: KOS 2017
Thanks for that clarification, Loz.
Hope she gets the other two WGM norms (and required rating?) in due course.

He told us his mother played (in one of the lower sections) too

Some pics from this year's event: http://brendanogorman.smugmug.com/Chess/Kos-2017
For those of you contemplating a chess holiday, I'd highly recommend this tournament. Don't worry about the absence of FIDE rating or the silly title. It's a well-run friendly event with seven different rating sections. The organisers will convert ECF grades to an equivalent FIDE rating. All announcements are in English. The hotel is superb, the food likewise. It's not for those who like lots of alcohol and sexual adventure when on holiday. It's not cheap but, as with the Kronenburg advert from some years ago, you might regard it as reassuringly more expensive

" It's not for those who like lots of alcohol and sexual adventure when on holiday."
From a purely scientific curiosity, which tournaments do you recommend for sexual adventure?
Alcohol is best avoided in Norway, owing to the high prices.
Good photos!
