Are Surtees and Wells playing in a different dimension? They are like 30 moves behind Mitchell - Hebden

I think Peter was rather shocked by 1 e4 c5 2 Nh3?! since he took quite a while to respond. I looked on a database which suggested that 2...g6 is a TN on move 2.....! All's well that ends Wells as Black has just mated with the aid of the a1-h8 diagonal.

Playing Surtees is like playing Basman, you never really know what they are thinking about or how they assess positions. In the case it appears the idea was to play a Grand Prix Attack with a Knight on f2. It didn't work terribly well against straightforward play by Wells.

He shouldn't have been. My database says Surtees has been playing 2.Nh3 for the last year.

Surtees-Gayson began in original fashion:

1. e4 c5 2. Nh3 d5 3. Bb5 Nc6 4.Ng5 e6 5. Bxc6 bxc6 6.d3 Be7 7.Nf3 Ba6 8.Nc3 Nf6 9.e5 Nd7 10.O-O O-O 11. Re1 Rb8 12.Ne2

Isn't that just a normal position where White has lost two moves?

By the end yes, somewhat unusual around move 4 though :D

Nice tactic in Merry v Wells, destined to appear in the Evening Standard column.

Wells - Storey on board 1 drawn after only 3 moves on each side!

Are there no local rules at Blackpool to discourage that sort of thing?

Clearly not. £550 each may help explain the early finish.

Wells had a tough game in the morning and only 45 minutes between rounds.

They played blitz for the plate.

Wells 2.5 Storey 0.5

Impressive knock-out by Alan Merry against my clubmate, Phil Crocker (0-1, 36). He had to see the winning lines quite a long way out

Bit odd that Storey didn't have to play anyone 200+, if you don't call the last round a game.

Where are the rounds 1-4 games to be found? Only round 5 now seems to be online.
