What's the format for a three-player play-off? Who gets to sit out the first game (assuming that's an advantage)?
"Do you play chess?"
"Yes, but I prefer a game with a better chance of cheating."

If Howell wins (which now seems increasingly likely), can anyone work out the likely pairings in the play-off from the regulations?

http://www.britishchesschampionships.co ... s-21.7.pdf

Part G gives the details.

For a 4-player play-off, the semi-finals are 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3.

"The n tied players will seeded, from 1 to n, based on their tournament performance rating (TPR) for the tournament. This TPR will be calculated using the assigned ratings outlined above in this document."

That appears to be the July 2017 FIDE ratings and the TPRs from that.

The TPRs are not up for the round 9 results yet. The TPRs after round 8 were:

Jones: 2682
McShane: 2638
Howell: 2628
Hanley: 2541

I assume Hanley's win is not enough to make him anything other than number 4 seed. Jones is far enough ahead of McShane that the draw between them made little difference. If Howell wins, will his TPR go above McShane's? If so, that makes Howell number 2 seed (though it makes little difference).

The play-offs would be (colours to be decided by coin toss):

Jones vs Hanley
Howell vs McShane

This presumes Howell wins the endgame he is in (he should, it is a win according to the tablebases).

The number 1 seed sits it out. The seeding is TPR, so that would be Jones. But it won't be a three-player play-off, as you have Hanley and Jones and McShane there already, and either Howell (if he wins) or Emms (if he draws). There will be no play-off at all if Emms manages to win!

Craig Hanley looks the big winner irrespective of the play-off result. 90% of prize money will be split among the tieing players, so Craig appears to collect £4275 as a main prize plus £2000 rating prize. The top seeds can hardly complain, since two of their mutual games were draws in 16 and 13 moves, while McShane could not capitalise on beating Howell and being the clear leader with three rounds left.

Er, no they weren't.

They would do better to point to Hanley's relatively low TPR, and the fact that he only played one of them, and didn't beat a GM in the entire event, if they wanted to complain. But I think they will accept his finish as 1= as as something that can happen occasionally in a swiss. As for the prize money, they shouldn't complain - they did have starting conditions, after all.

Er, no they weren't.
Richard is right. McShane (with White) beat Howell. Jones drew both his games against Howell and McShane and had black both times. Jones had 5 blacks, while Howell and McShane both had 5 whites. Hanley had 5 whites and he had Black against Jones (drawn).

I wonder if McShane will repeat the line he used against Howell in the main event when they meet in the play-off?

So Jones not only played all the other three, but had Black against them all too. Hmm, I think he deserves it, so shall root for him in the tie break.

Can someone post the start time for the play-off, or post here when they have started? I think it is scheduled for after the prize-giving, so it may be a while yet.

(Jonathan, Jones had White against Hanley - I shall root for Hanley!)

Ah Chris, I trusted you! I still think that Gawain deserves it on the basis of the nine rounds played - Black against both main rivals, after all, and highest TPR by some way.

But a Hanley win would be quite a memorable event, granted!!

Ravi finished on 6/9, or 6/7 in the Major Open, depending on one's perspective.
