Keti is the stronger player of those two isn't she?

Yes. Certainly higher-rated. So anyone competing with her for the women's prizes might be pleased to see the draw. Not sure if the Ladies' Championships is open to non-ENG players? (Keti is SCO and Toma Katarzyna is POL and Sun Xinyue is CHN) Looks like Jovanka Houska should win that title anyway.

The British women's championship is open to non-ENG players, yes, on the grounds of being a British title and not an English title.

(More generally, FIDE affiliation is not relevant to determining eligibility for that or any other British championship.)

Thanks, Jack. I had forgotten this was the British Chess Championships! :D

Do you know if norm possibilities will be calculated and published before the last round?

If Gawain wins (he has a nice position at the moment) and top board is drawn (not definite as that game has hardly got going yet), any idea what the pairings might be on top boards in the final round? It will depend on the Hanley-Gormally result as well. Either that will be drawn, or one of them will join the group on 6.5/8.

Three players currently on 6.5, Jones, McShane and Emms. If Hanley-Gormally is decisive then there will be a fourth. I suspect that McShane-Jones is the likely pairing if we have three leaders with Emms downfloating. If Hanley wins then it's more likely that we'd have McShane-Hanley & Emms-Jones whilst if Gormally wins he's played all three leaders and so they would need to downfloat both him and probably Emms.

Stephen Gordon took over today for the weekend shift. OK but not a patch on Fernandez. Particularly disappointing that he didn't recognize Hawkins' Black Lion and couldn't make any theoretical contributions on the opening. Of Rahal's three sidekicks Fernandez has been the best by a comfortable margin IMHO, quick, razor sharp, well booked-up on the latest wrinkles and highly articulate.
Ah, but I was so much older then. I'm younger than that now.

Board 1 quick draw, board 2 Howell, board 3 Yang-fan, board 4 draw

Yang-fan to win the playoff having played nobody above 2441 in the main tournament. OK, being a bit mischievous there ... ;)

Gossip is saying Hull, but no confirmation by the ECF or alternative announcement. Usually it's in the programme, but there wasn't one this year and also there's a presentation about the next year's venue, which obviously didn't happen.

Dates aren't known either.

I really enjoyed Steven Gordon's commentary, perhaps nostalgia got the better of me.

Emms literally could not have had a tougher last round draw, but nice to see his good form however things finish

Will there be a playoff, if more than one winner ?

It has been an early start, so we will find out in a few hours unless someone else already knows.

Can't see anything published anywhere about norm opportunities.
Hopefully those in contention know what they need.

Ah, the timetable has a slot for play-offs on the Sunday afternoon, with the time limits specified in the regulations. Basically rapidplay with increment culminating in armageddon.

I'm hoping board 1 is decisive and board 2 a draw. Either that, or board 1 is a draw and Emms wins by winning on board 2. That would be a real turn-up for the books, and most unexpected.
