Is this just a normal rapidplay or is the the winner the official English rapidplay champion or is is just that you have to play 1 c4 in all the games?

Hi Chris
No need to play c4 at all, this is the new English Rapidplay Tournament so yes the winner would be crowned the English Rapidplay Champion for 2017.
All details are being finalised currently and will be updated here hopefully within a week from now.
Hope you can make it, open to all, please circulate!
Thanks

I can find no reference to this congress on the ECF website - not even on the calendar.
Can you confirm James that this title is explicitly recognised by the ECF?

Hi Michael

yes it will appear on the ECF calendar very shortly once all details are finalised. I does have the ECF seal of approval for the title of English Rapidplay.

OK fair enough.
Not your fault, of course, but it does concern me that an English chess title should appear at such short notice, not be announced first by the ECF and not put out to tender. Have I missed something?

Wasn't this mentioned by Malcolm at the end of the ECF Council Meeting.

The Northumberland Congress altered its dates to avoid a clash.

Malcolm mentioned this to me over dinner in Liverpool last Sunday evening. I may have misunderstood, but I gained the impression there was still some work to do with sponsors before this event was nailed down. Perhaps he made progress the following day.

I did express surprise at the dates. Liverpool is notoriously difficult for hosting events like this because weekend hotel capacity is swamped in season by football fans. On this occasion though, the date coincides with an 'international break' - kudos for working that out. On the debit side, the event clashes with the IoM international (23 Sept onwards) which will likely affect participation at the top end

Afraid not.

On the other hand, there's a 50/50 chance it will be Everton playing at home, and the fixtures aren't announced till June, and finalised till July. Book early.

Excellent news!

A minor irritation, but no more than that. Last year IOM invitations to English GMs almost seized up altogether. Only two participated.
