The ECF has announced a British Blitz championship. The format is that there are several open qualifiers each run as a Swiss with the top 2 qualifying for a final.

The qualifiers are scheduled for Saturday 8th September and the final for November (venue and date to be arranged)

Do you not remember the shemozzles about 25-30 years ago when players began replying to illegal moves to gain advantage. After recent events we may be heading for shemozzles v2.

What do you think should happen if a player plays an illegal move in blitz not necessarily involving check and before he presses the clock his opponent replies with what appears to be checkmate ?

In practice I would have thought the result of a win would stand assuming the player delivering mate didn't claim the illegal move. If the player who made the illegal move or a watching arbiter points out the illegality, presumably the game restarts with a time penalty as stipulated by the new Laws. Interesting problem though, and one that could arise in practice.

I don't think that's the case at all. If the player making the illegal move hasn't pressed the clock then he's entitled to take it back and replace it with a legal move, without penalty.

Has there been any more announcements for this? The initial announcement said there would be more information in Spring, and we are well past that now.

I'm pretty sure I've seen something further since the spring, but this is the English Chess Forum, not the English Chess Federation so you would be better sending a message to the Federation office. It is not mandatory for the ECF officers to post here, so whilst some may choose to do so there is a more correct channel of communication.

The London qualifier is a fair bit stronger than the rest. A good choice of venue by Nick Pert in Bristol!

Interesting to see that James Sherwin is also playing, after no sign of him playing any graded or rated chess for several years, and just a few weeks before his 85th birthday.

Do we have a record breaking pairing in Newcastle? In round 15 the player of Black on board 1 is being upfloated to a play someone who has 7 points more than he does.
