North Wales Congress 2018: Change of Date

Post by Syringa Camp » Sat Jan 20, 2018 2:23 pm

20.01.2018

Announcement of date change for 2018 North Wales Congress (Venue Cymru, Llandudno)

The date of the 2018 congress has been brought forward a week and will now take place Friday 22nd to Sunday 24th June.

The change is necessary because Llandudno will be hosting Armed Forces Day 2018 on the weekend we had originally booked. This major national event is expected to attract around 200,000 visitors, which would make accommodation both hard to find and unusually expensive and travel a bit problematic. Also, Venue Cymru is now no longer available (we understand it will be closed for security reasons).

Apologies for any inconvenience to players who have already made plans. Anyone who has already booked accommodation should have no difficulty changing their booking, as hotels will expect to be able to re-fill any cancellations very easily that weekend.

For anyone planning to extend their stay longer than the chess weekend to enjoy some holiday time in North Wales, do bear in mind that while Armed Forces Day itself is on Saturday 30th June, celebrations begin the week before (Monday 25th), so you may wish to book early or avoid that particular week.

[ECF and WCU calendars are in the process of being updated; people who have already entered have been contacted individually].

Hotels are booking up fast that weekend....not sure about guest houses. Lets hope this weather keeps up for that week!

I know its not your problem, but 200,000 visitors in/around Llandudno? Wow. Really can't imagine where they're all going to stay.

I guess the tourist information centre will be kept busy with enquiries, but the north west based chess players might go for the Friday night bye ...and commute that weekend.

The entry numbers are rising for the Llandudno `North Wales congress` but still a bit light in the OPEN section.
With the top two sections being FIDE rated and good prize money on offer, this event deserves a higher level of support, so we`ll see what the numbers are next w/e when battle commences. certainly the accommodation situation still looks ok regarding availability, but probably worth contacting the tourist information people for advice on B&Bs etc.. if not already booked. Just want some good weather for those taking a short break.
