Why host this the exact same day as the Stockport one?

I think we didn't have enough time to do it in November/December, and February will be the Warwick University Rapidplay, and March will be the Birmingham Rapidplay, so we were constrained to January. Narrowing on the month, 4NCL dates were a constraint, as well as the well known Coventry Chess Academy running on Saturdays, so we only really had Sunday. Also, our venue seemed to offer up the hall for weddings etc for Saturdays.

Hopefully, it shouldn't be a problem, as Stockport is quite far away from Coventry!

Nottingham Rapidplay on the 20th another event that they probably wanted to avoid clashing with.

Over 100 miles - it's not like two events in the same town.

Again thanks for the responses, but I'm going to open a new thread shortly to discuss this as my thoughts are not directly related to Coventry vs Stockport exactly, rather the chess scene in the north in general and I don't want to detrail this thread. Thanks.

Chess milestone: Coventry celebrates 100 years of local Chess League
Celebrating 100 years of fostering chess across Coventry, Warwickshire, and the wider-Midlands, in 2019, with an exciting tournament.

PRESS RELEASE

Coventry, West Midlands / 15 Jan 2019 / -- The Coventry and District Chess League (CDCL) today announced the 100th anniversary celebrations of a thriving local chess scene. Clubs from the city, its two universities, and the surrounding towns of Nuneaton, Rugby, Kenilworth and beyond, have formed the backbone of this local League - whose members will be coming together in fewer than two weeks (on Sunday 27th January) for a one-day Rapidplay chess tournament!

The Centenary Tournament will be open for everyone from Coventry and far beyond, to enter. The worshipful Lord Mayor Cllr John Blundell will be kindly joining us at this historical occasion. The Tournament is further supported by English Chess Federation Director and World Chess Federation (FIDE) Arbiter, Dave Thomas, who will be the tournament's Chief Arbiter [umpire].

Chess, in general, can include Standardplay games lasting several hours, to considerably faster Rapidplay or Blitz games. Each year, the League offer a variety of chess for clubs and members to participate, from team events in the main league, to the shorter, Divisional Cup, Knock-Out Cup, and Plate tournaments, as well as, the Summer Cup for individuals to enter.

Demographics of local chess have changed over the century, since 1919. We have had many players from the city's (and nearby towns') working men's clubs, local schools, to the newer clubs at Coventry University, and the University of Warwick.

Nationally, growing numbers of players with busy work lives, now engage with chess online, which our clubs cater for with an established online presence, as well as, some online events! So, whatever your interest and level, the League remains open to all.

Members of the public are more than welcome to get in touch, to participate or join the League's constituent clubs. Entry details for the upcoming Centenary Tournament, can be found here: https://covchessleague.blogspot.com/p/rapidplay.html
