Adam's tournament organising has spread far and wide, not just in London.
True, it was probably another reason :)

I have offered in the past, and got nowhere.
Probably because of your location.
Adam's tournament organising has spread far and wide, not just in London.
I'm assuming the geographical location isn't the issue; I first went when it was at the Queen's Hotel next to Leeds railway station, and I also visited it a couple of times when it was in Halifax, though I've not been to the more recent location

It is good to have an event in the North, and Yorkshire does have lots of potential players; maybe Hull or Harrogate would think about hosting

Depends what the agreement is with the current organisers (although if it were a problem, then the English Rapidplay would be an alternative?)

I did try and have a similar format event at the football stadium in Bolton, but the sponsor pulled out

David, in that case would your comments have been better placed in a separate thread?
That's a matter of opinion. I don't regret making my comments in a thread entitled "Event Cancellation"

Once upon a time the British Rapidplay Championship used to be a tremendous event. Posts subsequent to mine indicate that I am far from being the only person who feels that the current offering, even pre-pandemic, is not worthy of the name.

Do they retain the right to call it a "British Championship" indefinitely ...
Allegedly they do. So far the ECF Board have not been willing to put that to the test.

Maybe an alternative will come forward for 2021. Three months of lead time is not ideal but might be sufficient.
Perhaps someone might try to organise an event called the "Not the British Rapidplay Championships"

This probably does need a separate thread, but I'm assuming there isn't a formal document such as the British Championship one you have referenced previously; that gives the ECF the rights to organise the British on behalf of the other chess nations, but presumably doesn't cover the Rapidplay

The Blitz seems to have been organised successfully; I think that was called the British too?

The ECF have organised the UK Blitz twice in recent years and the British Blitz has been organised by Adam Raoof, myself and Ljubica Lazarevic (2003-2006) and possibly others (Alex Holowczak?).

You are forgiven Ronnie. I'll let you off this time. I made a mistake by reporting the Gold Coast Open too late.
You might want to change the grammar in your sentence before someone sends you down to the Pedants United topic.

Whilst I started this thread to reflect cancellations only, I see that discussion has turned to the British Rapidplay.

No one seems to have started a separate thread on this ; however I can confirm that I sent an e-mail last year to Adrian Elwin, who was then Director of Home Chess, copied to Mike Truran with documentation relating to this event.

Dear Chess Player

I am sad to inform you that as organisers of the Torbay Chess Congress we have decided to cancel the 2021 Congress.

There is clearly an ongoing risk from the Covid virus. In our judgement we cannot ensure player safety during the Congress.

On a positive note, we are planning to hold the 2022 Congress on Armistice weekend (11th - 13th November) at the Toorak Hotel.

If you won a trophy at the 2019 Congress please feel free to hold on to it for another year. If you are moving away from the area or would simply like to return it, please let me know and I will arrange to pay for the carriage.

Kind regards

Ken Alexander
Congress Organiser
