"but there truly are circumstances beyond anyone's control."
"Due to covid 19 restrictions which will not expire before vaccine take-up exceeds 80% of the population"

What?

May be the policy of those who own possible venues - though we should have 80% of adults jabbed twice by then on present trends?

That doesn't sound very likely to me. Venues are trying ( with difficulty ) to decipher Government advice, not invent their own benchmarks.

My guess would be that it's something made up by the organisers.

From
http://www.british-rapidplay.org.uk/2020site/index.html
With the rise in covid 19 numbers due to the delta variant, and the likelihood of other more vicious variants likely to appear in the near future, it has been decided to postpone the tournament for another year.

250 people in an enclosed environment is a mass spreading event, especially as we will be in close proximity and breathing on each other for most of the day.

Masks are not good enough in that situation.

I expect the following to happen:
"I" is presumably the British Rapidplay's in-house epidemiologist. Do we have a name?

Brent Kitson seems likely.

After the fiasco of 2019, when the event was registered for FIDE rating but the FIDE Rating Report was never produced, the ECF Board should take advantage of the further twelve months' absence to get a grip on this supposed British Championship.

These comments from Nick and David seem unduly harsh to me. The organiser, whether an epidemiologist or not, has to make a judgment on safety.

In response to Angus. I would just like to make it clear that the substance of my self-quoted comments are unrelated to the pandemic.

David, in that case would your comments have been better placed in a separate thread?

If the organisers had simply said that, with three months to go, Covid uncertainties have just made the whole thing too much trouble, that would be disappointing but understandable.

By inventing nonsense like

"Due to covid 19 restrictions which will not expire before vaccine take-up exceeds 80% of the population"

they have tried to make themselves look really clever and scientific but have achieved the opposite effect.

This is not a good look for a flagship ECF event, and it isn't obvious to me why the current organisers should be assuming that they will keep the franchise.

It should be a flagship event, but in my experience it is not run like one.

Do they retain the right to call it a "British Championship" indefinitely, through inertia or through lack of an alternative?

Maybe an alternative will come forward for 2021. Three months of lead time is not ideal but might be sufficient.

I have offered in the past, and got nowhere.

Probably because of your location.

Adam's tournament organising has spread far and wide, not just in London.
