That doesn't sound very likely to me. Venues are trying ( with difficulty ) to decipher Government advice, not invent their own benchmarks.

With the rise in covid 19 numbers due to the delta variant, and the likelihood of other more vicious variants likely to appear in the near future, it has been decided to postpone the tournament for another year.
250 people in an enclosed environment is a mass spreading event, especially as we will be in close proximity and breathing on each other for most of the day.
Masks are not good enough in that situation.

These comments from Nick and David seem unduly harsh to me. After the fiasco of 2019, when the event was registered for FIDE rating but the FIDE Rating Report was never produced, the ECF Board should take advantage of the further twelve months' absence to get a grip on this supposed British Championship.

It should be a flagship event, but in my experience it is not run like one.
