I am at the World trial. The hotel is very nice and the playing condition are very good. We have free Wi-Fi so I'm sure you will see updates throughout the event.

Thanks for the update - what is happening in the U16 girls/U12 girls - are they playing today?

For me, that shows how ridiculous the policy of sending one player is. If the parent has to stump up over 90% of the cost anyway, we might as well just set a minimum qualifying standard and let anyone go who meets it, wants to, and can afford it.

Most parents will spend the best part of £160 attending the trial.

It's figures like these that make me glad that my children opted for music (£200-£300 each to go on a one-week foreign tour) rather than chess. (Not saying they'd ever have been good enough, but I think the point is obvious!)

You'd still have to decide who gets the "free" place.

Apparently the girls were not due to play today. However, Jennifer and Chantelle couldn't find a winner yesterday, so they are still at it.

So the girls places have already been decided, in all sections?

Someone told me that there is no competition needed for some age groups as there is only one serious girl chess player in that section (e.g. Katherine Shepherd in under 14 girls). A very sad state of affairs if true.

Who is "someone"?

I don't doubt you're right; it seems like the players listed above in the Girls sections are the only ones playing in the Trial, which is why I interpreted Matthew's post to mean that the girls places are sorted - or at least, the winners of the trial are determined - apart from the one which was still drawn.

I know that in most and probably in all the girls sections (the U14 girls being no exception), there were a number of girls that were strong enough to take part in the trial but for various reasons are not there. The grandprix, grading list and trial last year give a better idea of the strength of girls chess in general. Clearly the large cost in attending the Worlds is an influencing factor in deciding whether to take part in the trial as are work and school commitments.
