In Round 2 of the Championships the England squad struggled, with 3 wins, 2 draws and 8 losses.

However, in Round 3 the squad roared back, with 9 wins, 3 draws and 2 losses.

The only England player on 3 / 3 is Zoe Veselow in the U8 Girls section.

I have justed watched this game, between two of the leaders in the Girls U8s. Black is our own Zoe Veselow.

I think it was rather good.

In round 4 of the Championships the England squad had 7 wins, 2 draws and 4 losses.

The maximum possible score would have been 12 points, as in the U14 Girls section the two England players faced each other. Olga Latypova defeated Emily Maton.

In Round 5 of the Championships the England squad had 6 wins, 2 draws and 5 losses.

In Round 6 the squad had 8 wins, 1 draw and 4 losses.

In the U8 Girls section, Zoe Veselow has 5½ / 6. Her win in Round 6 was somewhat fortuitous but by no means undeserved.

That's rather elegant, can't wait for the opportunity to describe one of my own games like that.

In Round 7 of the Championships the England squad had 7 wins, 1 draw and 5 losses.

In the U8 Girls section, Zoe Veselow went down to defeat against a very strong Russian girl. She is now in joint second place with 5½ / 7.

In the U10 Girls, Ruqayyah Rida, who had suffered the same fate against a very strong Russian girl in Round 6, defeated another Russian in Round 7 to reach joint second place, also with 5½ / 7.

Round 8 of 9 starts at 3pm (UK/Irish time) this afternoon. I am one of the local arbiters at the Dublin venue.
We entered 26 players in 11 of the 14 sections but one didn't start and two more have since dropped out.

Ireland's WIM Trisha Kanyamarala is now sole leader of the Girls U16 after defeating the previous sole leader in round 7 yesterday.
I hope I haven't jinxed her by posting this.

In the Under 12 Open, Scotland's Frederick Gordon is one of several players in contention for silver or bronze. He was held to a draw in round 1 by a 2185-rated Azeri and then won five in a row. Yesterday he went down to a Turkish player who has won all his games. Today the Turk meets the only player who is on 6pts.

I'll point out, as there has elsewhere been criticism of junior selection methods, that - as of the end of round 7 - the England team is doing rather well. All 13 juniors (perhaps the ECF could select a more propitious number next time!) have at least 50% with scores ranging from 3.5 to 5.5.

They did select 14.

I stand corrected. One presumably dropped out.

That is correct.

Alex Holowczak invited a larger number of players, but some of them declined the invitation.

Big day in the girls U8 tomorrow. The Russians are hoping for a clean sweep of the medals and only Zoe stands in their way.

Shades of Bobby Fischer!

I met Zoe Veselow for the first time only a week ago, but one thing which I can say confidently about her is that she is nothing like Bobby Fischer.

In Round 8 of the Championships the England squad had 5 wins, 4 draws and 4 losses.

Going into Round 9, the final round:

In the Girls U8 section, Zoe Veselow, who won in Round 8, remains in joint second place with 6½ / 8.

In the Girls U10 section, Ruqayyah Rida, who had a hard fought draw in Round 8, also remains in joint second place with 6/8.

George Zhao, in the Open U8 section, and Aaravamudhan Balaji, in the Open U16 section, each have 5½ / 8. They can still finish among the prizewinners, although medal prospects are more problematic.
