Junior Chess Magazines?
I am attempting to compile a definitive database of all current chess publications aimed at children and juniors.
I am interested in all flavours, paper based, email only, email digests, web based or anything else.
If you know of anything in this respect please reply here.

Re: Junior Chess Magazines?
I write very basic booklets for my kids in my school chess club. I'm not published but we sell them to raise money for chess club funds with the aim of helping to pay for next year's 4NCL Junior campaign. There not on a par with Tim Onion's stuff etc but they do provide a reference point for my kids to look back on when they have gone home.

Thanks Andrew. Could we include an article on Certificate of Merit in your children's publication?

Andrew,
Remember the CoM has cost £24,000 and counting, so presumably they have a big budget to pay for advertising.

Where are you getting this figure from?Matthew Turner wrote:Andrew,

CoM has cost nothing like this amount : in fact, the true amount is somewhat less than £24,000
Possibly you have mixed in CfS costings? Easily done...

John,
That figure comes from the ECF accounts.

Has it been broken down into exactly how the figure was arrived at?Matthew Turner wrote:John,

I've not studied the accounts as I'd rather stick pins in my eyes than spend time doing such things.

John,
If you are saying it is inaccurate, then presumably you are in the best position to say what the accurate figure should be to avoid any confusion.

Re: Junior Chess Magazines?
I will contact the ECF DoF and attempt to obtain an accurate figure. It could be that CfS items have leaked into CoM.Matthew Turner wrote:John,

'www.njca.org.uk' is, of course, the Home of Junior Chess in the North.
Of course a lot of you benighted southerners don't seem to realise that Manchester is in the distant South-West and that Liverpool is the capital of North Walesl

I don't actually believe the ECF want that information to become any clearer and no reporting will appearJohn Upham wrote:I will contact the ECF DoF and attempt to obtain an accurate figure. It could be that CfS items have leaked into CoM.

Matthew,
I believe that, in error, the salary of the CfS Administrator has been lumped into the figure of £24K. This appears to be inappropriate. Does that mean that CfS costings include the self same salary? Surely it cannot appear twice but, despite having a DPhil. in Physics I was never tempted to become a lion tamer and thus accountancy matters bored (and continue to bore) me to tears.
I have asked the question of the DoF and hope to receive a reply at some point. Should I do so I will let you know.
I don't wish to be publish the CfS salary for obvious reasons.

Re: Junior Chess Magazines?
I think until we hear word to the contrary then we are safest to stick to the official figures. That means that the CoM has cost £24,000 so far. We can also add in the further £6,000 for development costs for 2010/11. Of course CoM is also used to justify £5,000 a year spent on the Right Move. By now the project has probably cost in excess of £40,000. Lets hope the number of people taking the test continues to gather momentum, otherwise it is going to take a awful long time to make all that back.
