European School Chess Championship 2013

The European School Chess Championship 2013 starts on Friday in Novi Sad, Serbia. The event is a FIDE rated 9-round tournament played over 7 days with two double round days and no rest day!

Today is Day 3 (a double round day) with Round 3 at 10:00 and Round 4 at 17:00.

Unfortunately in Round 3 in the U11 Open we have 3 England v England games!

We had a big thunderstorm for a few hours last night, just hoping the players got enough sleep.

We scored 11/25 in round 5.
Today is a double round day again with rounds starting at 10:00 and 17:00. Round 6 is underway.

Round six finished with our best round so far 14/25 (10 wins 6 draws and a bye) - fantastic effort from all the players.

The weather has changed dramatically from the mid 30's to below 20c, cloudy and rainy. Seems to suit us!

We have been told there will be no water in Novi Sad tomorrow between 07:00 - 22:00!

It is the ninth and final round today and it looks like quite a few of the English players have the opportunity to push on into the top ten. I notice Tom McLaren is paired against his 6th English opponent!

That is unlucky, but computers give objectively the correct pairing, although you can argue whether you want objectivity or not. It's a long trip to play someone you probably know quite well.

Actually in this case, it wouldn't matter what pairing system you used as 5 of the 6 players on his score group are English!

Apologies for delay in updating. The team have continued with excellent results scoring 13/25 points in both Rounds 7 & 8.

Round 9 is now underway - 13:30 start today.

The England V England clashes in the u11 Open are not ideal but have been taken well by the boys and parents. The no draw until blacks 40 move rule has prevented any quick draws. Tom's first match against an England player lasted close to 4 1/2 hours.

In the u9's Open today the Balouka-Myers twins have been paired together.
