This term has seen the Regional stage of the tournament and results can be seen at http://englishchess.org.uk/NSCC/u19-open/
Most of the 13 regional finals will be played this month (one was played last month) and then the repechage at Eton College in April will determine the final 3 teams to play at the National Finals at Uppingham in early July.

There is now a report on the ECF website about the U19 Finals, won for the first time by RGS Guildford: http://englishchess.org.uk/NSCC/u19-open/
Thirty different schools have now won this prestigious competition, which dates back to the academic year 1957/8 when it was sponsored by The Sunday Times (The Times took over sponsorship between 1983 and 2001). Congratulations to RGS Guildford and to the fifteen other Finalists.

It was fitting, after Richard Haddrell's fifteen years of dedicated service as Chief Conductor, that there is now The Richard Haddrell Memorial Trophy which was awarded for the first time to the team which came second, Hampton School: http://www.englishchess.org.uk/a-new-tr ... pionships/

The following position was interesting, from Ravi Haria (Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School) v Michael Ashworth (Sir Thomas Rich’s School) Round 3, board 1. With best play what should the result be?

Win for White with 1 Be6! I think. After 1... Rxd2, White takes Be5 with discovered check and then comes back with Nf7+ followed by Nd6+ and Nxe8 and there's no stopping Bg7 mate (Qh1+ only delays). Nice!

But does Black have anything better than 1...Rxd2 ?

So it seems. The game is a great advert for the event, anyway.

I am interested to see the reference to a strong performance at the blitz by a teacher from Sir Thomas Rich's School, namely Ian Robson. Is this the same Ian Robson who used to teach at St Martins in Shenfield, many years ago?
