Surrey County Junior Selectors?
I would like to contact the official Surrey County junior (U11 and U13) selectors and don't know who they are.
I realise Wey Valley is geographically a sub-set of Surrey but does it control Surrey junior chess outside of its catchment area.
I have a crop of Surrey juniors who I'd like to be considered for county selection.
Help would be appreciated!

The main U11 county teams in the area are Richmond contact via RJCC http://rjcc.org.uk/richard/ and Wey Valley http://www.weyvalleychess.org.uk/index.shtml .
Coulsdon http://www.ccfworld.com/Chess/ run their own competitions.
For over 11 age groups the main Surrey junior contact details are on this page http://www.scca.co.uk/jun/jun_index.html.
In my experience it is quite hard to identify which juniors qualify for which teams in areas around London and there is some overlap (with for example a players school being in one are but the players living in another).
Middlesex http://middlesexchess.blogspot.co.uk/p/ ... chess.html
Kent http://www.kjca.org/
Sussex http://www.sussexjuniorchess.org/
Hampshire http://www.hampshirechess.co.uk/category/junior-chess/ (not sure if this is the main junior site)
Berkshirehttp://www.bjca.org.uk/
Contact details for teams seem to be somewhat lacking on he EPSCA website

Re: Surrey County Junior Selectors?
David,
Thanks for this. Are you saying juniors who wish to play for the Surrey County must be selected by Wey Valley or Richmond?
The juniors I have in mind are based in Farnham Schools which do not fall inside the Wey Valley or Richmond catchment areas. In fact, I do not know what the Wey Valley and Richmond catchment areas are! Are there maps available?
John

However London South-West areas (not Kingston) are mainly included in "Richmond" at the U11 age group, but for older teams the part of the Richmond EPSCA area which is South of the Thames is counted as Surrey.
U11 EPSCA areas are detailed here http://www.epsca.org.uk/rules/Associati ... overed.pdf for older teams (which could include some U11's) there is a Surrey team - the contact details are above.

Re: Surrey County Junior Selectors?
PS My post above is a slight simplification as Richmond are also involved in some older age group events as per this topic http://www.ecforum.org.uk/viewtopic.php ... 4&start=60

Make a contact with Christine if you are not sure. This is a pasting from the SCCA website.
Junior Chess in Surrey
Youngsters in Surrey have many opportunities to play chess and improve. There is a long tradition of support for junior chess in our county - generations of strong players, including several of today’s leading grandmasters, took their first steps in chess at the many schools and clubs in Surrey where chess is played.
The Surrey County Chess Association (SCCA) wishes to facilitate the sharing of information to encourage and support junior chess within the county.
If you are the parent or guardian of a child who wants to learn how to play, visit our Starting out page where we explain the pathways open to children who are new to chess and would like to take their interest in the game further. Visit our Clubs for juniors and Chess in libraries pages to find out where children can go to play chess and improve. For juniors who are already playing to a high standard, we have pages on junior tournaments and team events.
The welfare of young people is always a priority. Please click here to download our Child Protection Policy (CPP), but please note that this only covers activities managed by the SCCA. To review the CPPs of other activities mentioned here please contact the organisers.
If you can’t find the information you are looking for here, or if you have any questions about junior chess in Surrey, just drop us an email or telephone Christine Golding on 01372 276506.
The information on these pages is provided in good faith to help parents, guardians and young people to explore the opportunities for junior chess in Surrey. Most of the organisations that provide junior chess in Surrey are not managed by the SCCA. SCCA manages the SCCA adult and junior county teams only. The SCCA is not responsible for and makes no warranties or representations in relation to the safeguarding practices, services, products or other materials available from such organisations outside of SCCA control.
While we have taken every care to ensure the accuracy of the information provided here, please contact the organisations directly for information by clicking on the links. If you have comments, corrections or additions to the information provided here, please let us know.

This looks like deja vu all over again!
Wey Valley and RJCC teams (no matter how wonderful) are not Surrey teams.

Kevin did you look at this link given above http://www.epsca.org.uk/rules/Associati ... overed.pdf. If you did it would be good to have some further explanation of your view.
My understanding of this EPSCA document is that Wey Valley is only "not Surrey", because it also includes the London Borough of Kingston Upon Thames which was part of Surrey before becoming a London Borough. Richmond is South West London (excluding Kingston) so technically doesn't cover any of Surrey but it does include some London Boroughs that were previously in Surrey and are indeed counted as Surrey for many older junior and adult competitions.

Re: Surrey County Junior Selectors?
Thanks for the posts on this. May explain why Surrey are struggling to get U180 & U140 county teams out when a clash with U14/U130 Junior team.
So John can also contact adult county captains if he has some eligible players that want to play next Saturday if not on the radar of U14/U130 Junior team.
Other than contacting Christine why not contact Wey Valley as well. I actually think that there is explanations when talking about different competitions.
As for the confusing system between EPSCA & secondary schools much of this is around Local education authorities. It is why Wey Valley - Surrey, Weybridge has a Surrey County Council logo - Surrey being the education authority.
Of course the County Teams & Associations are based on historic boundaries & other competitions are not necessarily based on the same boundaries. And then changes to them.

Re: Surrey County Junior Selectors?
Over the weekend I was contacted by Christine Golding who has been very helpful indeed.
I am now wiser about the U14 and U18 teams and the selection process.
My next task is to grapple with the U11 selection process....
Wish me luck!

Wey Valley and RJCC operate partially or mainly within Surrey (as do CCF and others I probably don't know about) - they can all put out teams if they wish, but those teams are not representative of Surrey itself. I think it's great that all these organizations encourage juniors.
The SCCA website says,
"The information on these pages is provided in good faith to help parents, guardians and young people to explore the opportunities for junior chess in Surrey. There was a similar discussion elsewhere, where I and others expressed concern about mislabelling of teams!

Re: Surrey County Junior Selectors?
Kevin thanks for your clarification. Maybe I am missing something - I totally agree that Wey Valley are not a Surrey County Chess Association team. However as far as I am aware the closest competition to a County competition in the U11 age group is the EPSCA event and the rules of that event seem to me to clearly state that Wey Valley is the Surrey team plus the London Borough of Kingston(LBK). CCF are not in the EPSCA event and Richmond covers London Boroughs not Surrey. Logically it might be simpler if LBK were part of the Richmond team which could then renamed London South West and Wey Valley could be renamed Surrey but it's just not going to happen. I suspect however the whole thing causes some confusion to parents and also chess players - hence the original question .
Looking on the bright side at least Surrey has plenty of teams at all age groups, regardless of what they are called - unlike some Counties who seem to think that adult county chess doesn't exist
