7th Gibraltar Junior International Chess Festival

Post by John Higgs » Mon Aug 14, 2017 5:52 pm

The Gibraltar Junior International Chess Festival takes place in August each year.

The venue is the Caleta Hotel and follows the successful pattern of the Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival, offering competitive chess-playing opportunities with an equally strong social, fun and educational programme: opening reception, two excursions, master classes, blitz, coaching, gala dinner and prize giving.

The confirmed dates are 17th to 22nd August. There will be 6 rounds of standard play, both FIDE & ECF graded. The total prize fund is £15,000. There is a record entry for this year: currently 80 U12s and 56 U16s.

In noticed this on the ECF website (I posted under this heading as I assume it was at the junior event where he was taken ill - but I could be mistaken)

You may have heard that Dave Welch was taken ill whilst arbiting in Gibraltar. He is now back in Liverpool in hospital, though he remains extremely poorly. Should anyone wish to visit David, please email Peter Purland at [email protected]. Should anyone wish to send David a card, please send them care of Peter at 11 Warwick Drive, Wallasey, Merseyside CH45 7PJ …

It was immediately following the event, literally a few minutes after the conclusion of the prizegiving.

Get well soon, David W
