Just a brief reminder to get your entries as soon as you can. Remember that we welcome teams of every ability range. Do not be deterred if your teams consist of near-beginners. They will be made most welcome and have a great time, win, lose or draw.

Entries are building up very nicely for the Southern semi-final, with 65 teams entered already. That is 195 girls playing and enjoying chess!

We are aiming for 220 plus, which would be a new tournament record. Please do enter your school!

As usual, the Northern event could do with a push. There have to be schools out there who can raise a team of three girls. Let's not make female chess an apparently south-centred activity!

The closing date for entries to both semi-finals will be Saturday January 6th.

We cannot accept entries after that date for logistical reasons.

Entries will close for the southern semi at midnight tomorrow, 5th Jan. Absolutely no late entries will be permitted after that.

We will keep entry open for the northern event for as long as possible, in the hope that more schools will be able to raise a team.

Entries are CLOSED for the Southern Semi, which now has a colossal 92 teams taking part-276 players. This has to be some kind of record for a female only event in the UK.

Equipment from three counties is being shipped in.

With all this demand and talent , what the ECF needs is a Manager of Girls Chess. Who will step forward?

Well they had one, but she wasn't retained after the 2014 ECF elections. The post has remained vacant ever since albeit it is advertised here: http://www.englishchess.org.uk/about/vacancies/ The "Director of Women's Chess has been vacant" since Sarah stood down and the post of "Manager of Women's Chess" isn't mentioned anywhere so I guess that the director role replaced it.

Congratulations, Andrew, on your success with this tournament. It is particularly good to see so many secondary schools taking part.

Thank you Neill.

A great event to be sure and growing , but I am
not fully satisfied . Draw a line horizontally across the country north of Oxford and we can see why.

For information:
The manager of girls' chess is not the same as the manager of women's chess. There was until about a year ago a distinct Manager of Girl's chess.
As I understand it the role was not discontinued but the incumbent resigned (for personal reasons of time as I believe). Incidentally she was a he.
