EPSCA - Flanders Match

Post by Paul McKeown » Fri Sep 08, 2017 8:17 pm

Richmond Junior Chess club hosted a junior team from Flanders last weekend, on behalf of EPSCA

The English EPSCA Under 11 team (from last year's Y6 and this year's) heavily beat the team from Flanders, 12 - 4. However, it was a rather unequal contest, as the poor youngsters from Belgium were kept waiting for several hours on their bus, due to the increased length of border controls. Such is our new world. The match was reduced to one round, from the usual two, due to the late arrival of the visitors.

From Richmond, representing England in its team of 16, were Christopher Tombolis, Teddy Onslow and Kennan Kesterson. Young Clemence Dat-Pham, our new English Girls Under 8 Champion, having given a lovely welcoming speech in French with her older sister, Catherine, got a surprise call up to help Belgium, who had managed to lose a young player on the way due to forgetting his passport.

There was a party for the children on the Saturday evening, before the host families picked up their guests. We would like to thank the host families (and the many that volunteered), and we are in debt to them all. Wonderful people, thank you!

On the Sunday, there was the usual rapidplay tournament, featuring both teams, but it was open to any juniors and between a score and a dozen from Richmond Junior's took part.

I would like to thank Balvinder Ahluwahlia and Victor Cross from EPSCA who helped enormously, Rudi Valcke and Jan Verhercke from the Belgian federation, who lead the Flemish team, Tony from La Baguetterie in Twickenham, who provided the catering, Aangaan, the excellent Indian restaurant in Twickenham which fed our guests delectably on the Saturday evening, and the Travelodge by Twickenham Station, which put up the adult visitors.

Here is a copy of my welcome speech in Nederlands, for the connoisseurs:

Well done, Paul.

Sadly, these EPSCA events don't get the recognition they deserve and often pass unnoticed.

Hope to see you at the EPSCA AGM in Birmingham on Saturday 23rd September.
