The World Junior and Girls U20 Chess Championship starts today and runs to 25 November. The event is a 11 round FIDE rated event and is for boys and girls. The venue is Tarvisio, Italy.

As I understand it from the rules and regs the winner of the Open/boys will get the GM title. Praggnanandhaa is on 3.5/4 with a staggering performance rating of 2770 with 5 rounds to go and if he wins he beats Karjakin's record as the youngest ever.

There are 7 rounds to go, it's an 11-round tournament. Used to be 13 rounds!

Surely this would only be a first GM norm for Praggnanandhaa ??
Where do you think he got his other ones? Must be very recent if he has.

It's the World under 20 Championship, the winner of which is awarded the GM title if he or she does not already hold it. I think there's a place in the next World Cup as well.

Praggna has won again in round 5 this afternoon against a fellow Indian and is now 2nd-4th with 4.5/5 and a 2770 TPR. His stamina in the late rounds of a tournament has frequently been suspect so I am sceptical whether he can actually win this fiercely competitive event, but I guess he is currently a point or so ahead of the GM score so is well placed for his first norm.

There will be a circuit of three Indian GM tournaments around the turn of the year so at this moment his chances of breaking Karjakin's record have definitely improved as if he gets a norm at the World Junior he will not need all three Indian tournaments.

Round 5 results:

Updating a couple of the stories:

- Ravi Haria played (and lost) to both the Van Foreests, with losses either side producing a run of four losses in a row. A win in round 8 leaves him on 3.5/8.

- Katherine Shepherd is on 2.5/8 (one win, three draws).

- Praggnanandhaa is on 6.5/8, which secured his first 9-round GM norm (with a round to spare). He is one of two half a point behind the leader (Aryan Tari) who he plays in round 9 today. Tournament is 11 rounds.

Praggnanandhaa needs to win the tournament for the GM title; so now he has the norm, he can go for a win against Tari which would presumably put him in pole position with 2 rounds to go

SF not persuaded about Tari's compensation for the pawn. Nor am I. Any comments from anyone who knows anything about this line?
