Shreyas Royal has just scored an unbeaten 4.5/7 in the 4NCL spring congress U2050. He is rated 1812 and all his seven opponents were over 1900, three of them over 2000. His TPR is not available yet but should not be far short of 2100.

I don't recall an English U10 ever making a 2000+ performance before, although the gold standard remains Luke McShane's world U10 championship at age 8 at Duisburg 1992. Luke finished ahead of future elite GMs Alexander Grischuk and Etienne Bacrot.

Indeed, and don't forget the other young girl Anita Somton from Nottingham, also born 2004, who was rated 1803 but scored 4/7 with a 1966 performance.

So that's three massive quantum jumpers in a single tournament. We don't have too many of those in English junior chess these days, so all credit to the 4NCL for giving them the opportunity to shine. Judged by their impressive performances this weekend Jaufarally and Somton have suddenly emerged as perhaps the two best female prospects since Akshaya Kalaiyalahan.

As for Shreyas Royal: his TPR was 2091, and his Fide rating will jump 104 points with the aid of the K=40 coefficient There are only three others in the world born 2009 or 2010, two from Ukraine and one from the US, who are rated above 1900.

Yes, that rating probably came from Lloyds Bank 1993. Shreyas Royal's 2092 TPR is probably the highest U10 performance since McShane, and the second best ever. Both were technically U9s. On Duisburg, I think you were there, so I defer to your memory.

From the information on BritBase (thanks, John Saunders) it looks to me as though at that event Luke scored 2/6 against rated players with an average rating of 2269. (He also played 4 unrated players.)

That is a 2144 performance over those 6 games.

OlimpBase records a January 1994 rating of 2130 based on 10 games, so Luke must have had another partial rating of 2110 over 4 games.

My recollection of Lloyds Bank Masters 1993 is that it was Luke's fifth game against a rated opponent which completed his rating. That is consistent with the above.

Unfortunately my “memory” doesn’t’t extend to noticing which future super grandmasters we’re competing in the U10s . But Vallejo Pons seems a reasonable substitute for Aronian!

Mainka was second. Morozevich won the tournament with 9½/10.

Not quite, Mainka was second with 8.5 behind the runaway winner Morozevich with 9.5.

I too remember that game because I was staying with Rod and Luke at the time, found out from the overnight phone that he was playing Mainka, found what Mainka did against the Najdorf, and went nap on that by spending the entire morning with Luke preparing for the line which came up in the game. It's Lloyds Bank, though, not Lloyd's.
