Thread jacking - should the mods be stricter?

The threads on this forum wander all over the place. If it is a community standard everyone is happy with, I can live with it too. But most forums I read take a much stricter view.

I'll admit to being slightly amused by Carl Hibbard's comment he would like to sort out a thread but did not have time. In my experience most mods on IT forums would not even consider sorting a thread out. A normal response would be:
"This thread is to discuss x. If you wish to discuss y, please start a new thread. I have banned person z for 1 day"

Etiquette for posters is:
"This has given me an idea about game fee/ the state of young people today/ hippos stuck in the mud. I will start a thread to discuss it"

I agree but now Rybka has been stripped of all his world titles and all
the places have bumped up a slot do you think they will now give Fischer
back the defaulted Game 2 that was awarded to Spassky in '72 because
the ECF subs are higher now than they were in 1956 and although
the technolgy then was available very few chess magazines printed colour
pictures of chess players.

I do consider a split of a topic sometimes when it is an important matter....

My point was Carl is being incredibly nice. Mods generally don't sort out threads, they just ban people who disrupt threads until they learn to stop.

I think Paul's next sentence made his point quite clear

It's tough to know where to draw the line though, nearly every thread of any reasonable size wanders off track at some stage.

Paul has a point yes but we do try to play a little nicer than normal especially when you can see the names of who is being annoying and spoiling the discussions
