Real Names and Moderation Team

Post by Carl Hibbard » Wed Jul 09, 2008 8:04 am

Since I am getting a lot more hassle regarding anonymous handles what are peoples general thoughts now?

This is no longer the official forum and so both the moderation team and the requirement for real names could be removed

Personally I would be against this but will go with the general flow - this poll will remain for one month so please feel free

I voted no because I think in this particular case it helps to know who is who in real life, and keeps the debates mature. There are plenty of other chess forums where you can remain anonymous, but frankly most aren't worth reading because of the bickering and arguments.

Ah, back to this again :)
Problem is Carl, how do you know if someone signs up with a false name - ?

IMHO, I think the forum should be split in two.
Private section, real names only.
Open Forum for those wanting to use alias names.

If the Private section is a non starter then alias names it should be.

Anyway, just my 2 cents worth

I agree. This is a good forum and has some great debates. Lets keep it real. :D

Stay with real names.

At some point, I hope, maybe post AGM, this forum can once more be the official ECF forum.

If the postings are diluted by anonymous Herberts then this will be less likely.

If someone has a valid opinion why should they be too embarassed to ID themselves?

Fora elsewhere already have their fair share of anonymous nutters (and some named ones!) posting junk and abuse.

Real names please. No need to hide behind an alias!

Prefer real names! If I am prepared to put my real name to some of the rubbish that I spout on this forum, then I expect those that point out my shortcomings to do likewise. The last thing you would want is Rexel's Brother - from the Atticus Forum - joining in here, although I have always wondered whether that is a bit of a spoof.

You are right of course I don't it is only a best guess scenario

There is not an easy way to split the forum up and even if there was you have the same problem - how do you tell the alias from the "supposed" real name?

Carl,
Could you create a private area for ECF officials only?

This might help the remaining Luddites and shy ones to emerge for discussion...

I could but since I cannot get them to post anyway I really see no point, plus it is also a forum - if there is something for "discussion" it should be held in public is my thoughts

Carl,
I am sure that many would love to eavesdrop on behind closed doors discussions but there is often a time and a virtual place for them.

To discuss potential sponsors in public would be folly but nonetheless would be a useful activity in private.

You could always query the MySQL db to read it anyway.

It is of course possible if there is a call for it...

I voted NO. I don't mind using my real name. Besides, I can always hide behind Yosemite Sam :P (That's my Avatar for those who've turned it off)

The irony of this poll is that you have to be registered in order to vote, so those who won't sign up under their real name can't.

Therefore I declare the poll null and void.
